Furthermore, dance therapy helps people mentally, by creating an emotional release for people to express themselves through their movements. People who have dealt with pain and loss usually find that dance therapy helps them manage it. Since dance therapy uses a variety of different dances that lets people find a style that will suit them depending on the speed of the dance, type of music they would like, difficulty level, and whether they would like to dance with or without a partner. For instance, if the person would like to dance with passion than flamenco would be a great choice for them. Depression is determined by a lot of symptoms that contain unhappiness, value in oneself, and changes in sleep and eating. Most people believe that people with depression should use dance therapy to help ease their depression. Roberta Hersehnson published an article entitled, “Dance Therapy beyond Its ‘Flower Child’ Image”, which states that “The effects of the treatment can be dramatic, Ms. Seibel, as depressed people, for example, find ‘a way of mobilizing’ their lethargic bodies and shed feelings of helplessness” (Hershenson). It seems that dance therapy has a big effect for people who are depressed because it seems easier for them to express through their movements. Dance therapy helps lift the feelings off of their mind and body and releasing it out so easily. It appears that showing how they feel or felt by letting the feeling melt off of their body may be easier rather than talking about it to someone. In the article, “Dance and Movement Therapy for Depression”, the Michael Pekker explains that “Because dance therapy operates on the belief that the mind and body are linked, it seeks to heal emotional and physical illness simultaneously. Depressive patients are encouraged to find freedom from debilitating emotions in the movements” (Pekker). Since dance therapy is based off on the belief of the mind and body linking together it is supposedly healing both mentally and physically. So the movements the person displays is not just showing it through the body, but what the mind actually feels and wants to release. It may be working for depressed people if they are feeling their movement because it’s what they are letting off their mind.
