Most people believe that people with depression should use dance therapy to help ease their depression. Roberta Hersehnson published an article entitled, “Dance Therapy beyond Its ‘Flower Child’ Image”, which states that “The effects of the treatment can be dramatic, Ms. Seibel, as depressed people, for example, find ‘a way of mobilizing’ their lethargic bodies and shed feelings of helplessness” (Hershenson). It seems that dance therapy has a big effect for people who are depressed because it seems easier for them to express through their movements. Dance therapy helps lift the feelings off of their mind and body and releasing it out so easily. It appears that showing how they feel or felt by letting the feeling melt off of their body may be easier rather than talking about it to someone. In the article, “Dance and Movement Therapy for Depression”, the Michael Pekker explains that “Because dance therapy operates on the belief that the mind and body are linked, it seeks to heal emotional and physical illness simultaneously. Depressive patients are encouraged to find freedom from debilitating emotions in the movements” (Pekker). Since dance therapy is based off on the belief of the mind and body linking together it is supposedly healing both mentally and physically. So the movements the person displays is not just showing it through the body, but what the mind actually feels and wants to release. By universal definition, "sport" is listed as "an activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively." Football, basketball, baseball, soccer and other primary activities have always been concretely defined as sports in society. However, one of the most physically demanding activities is constantly forgotten when it comes to the realm of sports- dance. Dance requires a tremendous amount of training and creates an aura of competition in which people compete to be the best, win, and take home the trophy- just like in traditionally accepted sports. These sports, however, do not possess an element of psychological health threats that some competitive dancers unfortunately must account for due to the emphasis placed on physical appearance.

Research published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that ballroom dancing at least twice a week made people less likely to develop dementia (Marjie Gilliam). In my personal experience, dance helped improve my health because it is a form of physical activity. For example, in high school, I was in a dance club and we had to dance to hip hop. It required a lot of body movements and a lot of energy. I remember sweating a lot after an intense hip hop dance session. Moreover, through this dance club I lost weight and got more fit. Thus, dancing definitely benefits our health and keeps our body in shape. In dance I often struggle with being brave and committing to the movement. I got to thinking about what if instead of getting down on myself I could use dance to better my mind. Being clear of mind and relieving my stresses is something that I have always used singing for, but if I can take dance,something that actually stresses me out,dance, and make it a stress reliever. I can help myself and hopefully others as well. In researching this topic I found that there have been a few studies that have explored dance and mental health. Mental health is a subject I have always been interested in and so these articles were an easy read. It was relatively challenging to find articles that are both knowledgeable and reliable
Music therapy may also be experienced from more of a “listening” perspective, where a person suffering from depression listens to a particular piece of music and pays focus to any feelings, emotions, and images that emerge as a result. Using this as a basis, in 1970 an American music therapist by the name of Helen Bonny created what is known today as Guided Imagery and Music therapy (GIM) (Chou & Lin, 2006). GIM consists of the patient listening to therapeutic and calming music, eventually reaching a state of mental and physical relaxation (Chou & Lin, 2006). Once a patient is in this state, and with the help of the therapist, an individual explores images and feelings that arise in their mind as a result of listening to this music (Chou & Lin, 2006). This remains to be of particular importance as those suffering from depression often feel a lack of connection with one’s self and one’s feelings. Subsequently, the individual and the therapist work together discussing the images and feelings that the patient experienced, exploring the figurative meaning and themes and how they connect to the patient’s issues and everyday life (Chou & Lin, 2006). Such communication and exploration often allows for those afflicted with depression to express negative emotions more easily and bridge the gap between their internal state and expressing that state outwardly in a verbal manner (Chou & Lin, 2006), something that exclusive talk therapy at times struggles with.
