You know how in baseball there are strict rules, same with dance. If you make one wrong move or make a mistake and the judges see it, you get points taken off of your score. That affects the whole team. All games have a goal, have rules, and have restrictions. The goal of dancing is to get better and of course to win a trophy. There are very strict guidelines that the judges have in order to give you the highest score that you can get. Almost every sport out there requires strength, encouragement, and agility. Having good agility can get you somewhere far. Any sports team that you play for or any sport that you play, it requires to be emotionally mature. By universal definition, "sport" is listed as "an activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively." Football, basketball, baseball, soccer and other primary activities have always been concretely defined as sports in society. However, one of the most physically demanding activities is constantly forgotten when it comes to the realm of sports- dance. Dance requires a tremendous amount of training and creates an aura of competition in which people compete to be the best, win, and take home the trophy- just like in traditionally accepted sports. These sports, however, do not possess an element of psychological health threats that some competitive dancers unfortunately must account for due to the emphasis placed on physical appearance.
While the definition of a sport may vary by the person, the dictionary definition for a sport can be best described as, “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment” (Oxford Dictionary). Cheerleading has been a topic of an ongoing controversial debate as to whether or not it should be recognized as a sport. Players that engage in sports, such as, football, basketball, and baseball all display a genuine liking for their sport, which generally emphasizes why they take part in the activity. Similarly, cheerleaders have this same mindset, but society tends to overlook their passion through the generation of the argument that cheerleading does not require
Because some cheerleading squads don’t compete, society thinks of it merely as a physical activity. Even though cheerleaders’ main purpose is to support other athletic activities, cheer squads whom compete, follow all physical criteria to be considered a sport. Cheerleaders put forth an incredible amount of determination. They practice tirelessly to show off their skills, with little or no recognition for their efforts. Cheerleading is a sport because it requires physical fitness, skill, dedication, and stamina. Cheerleading should be considered a sport globally.
The typical idea of a dancer is that they are tall, slender, full of energy, and lucky because they dance with all of the “stars”. Much of this is true, however, what many people do not think of are the many hardships that a dancer goes through in order to achieve their high status in the dance world. It takes much hard work and determination along with good direction to become a dancer. However, nothing good comes without a price. Dancers often times have many pressures put on them which can lead to physical and emotional damages. These damages occur through the pressures from the media, parents, teammates, and the stereotype that society has placed on dancers.
The New York Times states that cheerleading is the fastest growing girls’ sport, yet more than half of Americans do not believe it is a sport. A sport is defined as “an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature” (dictionary.com). Cheerleading at a competitive level is physically demanding and requires team work to be the best. The misconception of cheerleaders being weak, nonathletic crowd entertainers makes people believe cheerleaders are not athletes and that cheerleading is just a hobby but cheerleaders that compete at a competitive level are in fact athletes because it meets the standards of what a sport is, which includes rules and regulations, and overcoming air resistance.
Every cheerleader gets upset when someone tries to dismiss cheerleading as a sport. “I know I did”, although cheerleading fits the definition of a sport as stated in the Oxford dictionary. According to the Oxford dictionary, a sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or other for entertainment. Have you ever been to a cheerleading competition? Having you not noticed how physical each routine are? Does this not entertain you? If you can honestly answer yes to any of that question, I believe the truth is you understand some of the elements of cheerleading can qualify as a sport. Not to worry, I came up with some facts I feel will strengthen this argument for cheerleaders everywhere, because the elements of cheerleading posse some differences and similarities when compared to other sports.
Cheerleading is a sport, but some people might think otherwise. Cheerleading is a squad of people who come together and do stunts, tumbling, and dancing in a routine, and for sideline they will do cheers and chants too. Cheerleading is considered a sport, cause of athleticism, competition, and time and dedication going into the sport.Anyone who does, or has done cheer will say it is a sport.
What is a sport? According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a sport is a "physical activity engaged in for pleasure"(www.merriam-webster.com). Does Cheerleading not fit that definition? Cheerleading is a physically demanding sport, that deserves to be recognized as such. People generally do not realize the difficulty of cheerleading, and how much effort and dedication actually goes into it. Cheerleaders practice as hard, if not harder than other sports to better themselves as athletes and a team as a whole. Not only is cheer a sport, it is a dangerous sport, just like any other athletic program. As a varsity athlete, and assistant cheer coach, I see every day the reasons why cheer should be considered
The definition of the word sport is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” As a matter of fact, dance teams compete around the world against other teams, they practice each week for twenty hours each day trying to synchronize their choreography until it looks perfect. The majority of professional dancers will not settle for anything less than perfection. The work that goes into being a professional dancer rivals that of any other competitive
I hear many people say that dance shouldn’t be a sport, but it has a team just like any other sport. While either at a dance competition or just dancing in the studio, you depend on the other dancers to help you not only individually but also as a team. If one dancer messes up it will hurt the team in many ways, you might not do as well when you compete, or you might have to slow down. I know not everyone sees it the same way, but I think dance should be a sport.
Dance is the only sport that you have to use every single part of your muscle. For dancers to do three to four minutes intense you need the stamina of an Olympic runner. Dance is just as intense as any other sport and can dangerous at times. When you don’t pull off a certain move correctly
as any other sport. In dance you have to be strong, have great stamina, be flexible
In the definition of a sport is says “...team competes against another or others for entertainment.” This is exactly what ballet does! Ballet can be performed individually or as a team. Most commonly it is performed as a team. Competitions take place all over the world and there are many expensive ballet shows. Most ballet is performed to be viewed. Ballet is one hundred percent watched for entertainment and ballet can be competitive. Now, most people say that ballet is not competitive therefore it is not a sport. This is incredibly false. There are tons of ballet competitions such as International Ballet Competition, New York International Ballet Competition, Prix de Lausanne, Youth America Grand Prix. These competitions are incredibly competitive and are watched for entertainment. Ballet can either be competitive or watched for fun and not competitive. This is the same as any other sport! Some sports are taken super competitively while other can not be taken so competitively. Plus karate is considered a sport and karate is not really that competitive. Ballet is competitive and is watched for entertainment this meets both of the standards for being a sport so why is it not considered a sport? When deciding weather ballet should be a sport the answer is quite simple: of course ballet should be a sport because it requires physical exertion, is competitive, and is watched for
An athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature. Dictionary.com’s definition of a sport. When people think of sports they think of football, soccer, baseball, basketball, swimming, etc. What do you think ballet is? Ballet and dance itself are considered arts. Dance is an art form. When someone dances the goal is to tell a story through movement and not words. I feel that dance is just as much of a sport as it is an art. Ballet is just one of many kinds of dance. When people think of ballet they think of flexible people in tutus. I know that’s what I think of, but there’s way more to ballet than just being flexible and wearing awkward clothing. Unlike other arts, ballet requires just as much as any other sport does. There’s more to ballet than you even know. So is it a sport or an art?
To many, dance is only an art. In reality, dance is much more. It 's an art, a sport, a way to express one’s self, a way to exercise, a way to get feelings out.
