What Is Dance?
“Dance is a powerful impulse, but the art of dance is that impulse channeled by skillful performers into something that becomes intensely expressive and that may delight spectators who feel no wish to dance themselves.”(Makrell).
“Dance is all of your emotions put together into a single piece.”(Ard-O'Connor).
“Dance is movement. Dance is picture making. Dance is storytelling. Dance is expression. Dance is emotional.”(Young). Above were a few quotes from dancers on what they think dance is. Here’s what I think, dance is a way to express any emotion the dancer is feeling, whether it’s sad, angry, or happy. They can express these in a way without words and only with movement and still get the story or emotion across to the

“At its best, this fearless do-it yourself aesthetic, which exists for reasons both artistic and economic, leads to wonderfully rich, unmediated worlds in which artists ideas drive new creations.”( La Rocco).
“Dance competitions and competitors are better classified as a sport. Dance competitions have all the elements necessary to be considered a sport. While there are many artistic elements in social dancing it is not considered an art form.”(Wells) According to some people dance is considered a sport, to others it is considered an art. In my opinion, the above quote by Pattie Wells said it best, competitive dance is considered a sport and performing arts such as Broadway and other forms of shows where the dancer is not competing against another dancer would be considered an art. High school dance would be more considered a sport and studio dance where dancers perform a showcase would be considered an art. How are all styles of dance different?
“Ballet originated in the 15th century, first in Italy and then in France. Over the centuries, ballet has influenced many other styles of dance and become a fine art form in its own

Those are just some of the more popular types. Going back to the sport verses art most people would consider the ballet and modern styles as more of an art, and the hip hop and jazz styles as more of a sport. There are so many types of dance and so many types of dancers. Typically a dancer will have a style that they prefer and that they are the best at. A lot of the time a showcase will have a bunch of different styles of dance, but sometimes they have specific ballets, or even specific hip hop showcases. What I’ve noticed is that more times than not, dancers tend to like ballets more than non-dancers and a lot more non-dancers like hip hop shows than ballet. How have the styles of dance changed over
Dance is the universal language of the soul. Dance speaks of the truest inner feelings and life experiences of a dancer. Every dancer and/or choreographer will grow up to have a very distinctive style and set of unique techniques, dance values, and teaching methods to be followed. The dancer whom we will be analyzing in this paper is a pioneer of modern dance, Lester Horton. He was born on January 23rd, 1906 in Indianapolis, Indiana (Segal, 1998). He had moved to California to create dances and had developed a fresh and unique style of technique and choreography (Warren, 1977). He established the first permanent theater in America devoted to dance, and organized one of the first integrated modern dance companies (Yeoh, 2012).
The words “competitive dance” alone say it all. The whole purpose of dancing at competitions is to compete against other dance teams in order to try and win an award. Without the competition aspect, dance should not be considered a sport. Yes, it is a physical activity that involves a lot of strength and time that needs to be dedicated to it. But without the competitive aspect, it would not be a sport. To be a sport, a team has to compete against another team for the enjoyment and entertainment of others (Sport, 1). This is the goal of any competitive dancer or dance team. For something to be a sport, it specifically needs to be in a competition setting as well as have the purpose behind it of entertaining. People do not go to a football or basketball game to sit there and watch two teams just play an equal and fair game with no activity and no winner. If all games and performances in the sports realm were like this there would be no one there to watch them because they would not be entertaining. With competitive dance, there is always two or more teams or dancers going up against each other to get the win. And a major reason why dancers compete is to entertain, because they love the satisfaction of the crowd being pleased by their performance. “I dance because it feels good. Also, applause,” said Helen Phelan, a freelance dancer
I can understand why people think that dancing is considered a sport. Yes, it requires physical activity, such as stretching, they go through 12 hours of dancing a day if they are professional dancers. Yes, in competitive dancing they may be competing for a trophy or an award, such as a competition. However, these things all contribute to why some people may consider dancing to be a sport, but dancers do not know what physical strength a football player needs to have or a soccer player. As well as competing for a trophy. Most dancers just dance for fun or as an hobby, but when a sport player goes out on a field they are always competing for a trophy or some

As social dance evolved, these different cultural identities were exposed to one another.
