What Is Dance?
“Dance is a powerful impulse, but the art of dance is that impulse channeled by skillful performers into something that becomes intensely expressive and that may delight spectators who feel no wish to dance themselves.”(Makrell).
“Dance is all of your emotions put together into a single piece.”(Ard-O'Connor).
Dance is movement. Dance is picture making. Dance is storytelling. Dance is expression. Dance is emotional.”(Young). Above were a few quotes from dancers on what they think dance is. Here’s what I think, dance is a way to express any emotion the dancer is feeling, whether it’s sad, angry, or happy. “Dance competitions and competitors are better classified as a sport. Dance competitions have all the elements necessary to be considered a sport. While there are many artistic elements in social dancing it is not considered an art form.”(Wells) According to some people dance is considered a sport, to others it is considered an art. In my opinion, the above quote by Pattie Wells said it best, competitive dance is considered a sport and performing arts such as Broadway and other forms of shows where the dancer is not competing against another dancer would be considered an art. High school dance would be more considered a sport and studio dance where dancers perform a showcase would be considered an art. How are all styles of dance different?

Those are just some of the more popular types. Going back to the sport verses art most people would consider the ballet and modern styles as more of an art, and the hip hop and jazz styles as more of a sport. There are so many types of dance and so many types of dancers. Typically a dancer will have a style that they prefer and that they are the best at. A lot of the time a showcase will have a bunch of different styles of dance, but sometimes they have specific ballets, or even specific hip hop showcases. What I’ve noticed is that more times than not, dancers tend to like ballets more than non-dancers and a lot more non-dancers like hip hop shows than ballet. How have the styles of dance changed over
