Dear Dan Gable, I was born into a wrestling family. My family gave me hope that I would become a good wrestler. My grandpa was a state champ when he was a senior and my dad placed third in districts. I started wrestling when I was four years old. My dad taught me a lot of moves that I could use in a match. Then I started going to clubs and putting more work into wrestling. Im sure Dan went to many clubs to get better.
This book inspired me to not give up and push when it hurts. Like one time in a match I was losing by six, then I ended up winning by 1, because this book inspired me to push when it hurts. After reading this book I think the difference it makes in life is too continuing go for greatness. No matter how bad it may seem right now in life Wes Moore proved that you can still become something great in life. A quote I took from this book was “Failing doesn't make us a failure. But not trying to do better, to be better, does make us fools.” (Moore) I know people who have given up on a lot of things in life because of bumps in the road. I would say this book changes how I look at the lives of others, but in two different ways. One way would be that be can change their life arounds even if they grew up that way. When you think your average baseball player, what do you think of? The player usually has all of his arms, legs, and no physical disabilities. Anyone who plays baseball would think it is hard to imagine that a person born without a right arm is able to play the game and let only be able to be a pitcher. Jim Abbott faces all the odds and has ten-year career in the major leagues. Abbott had to faces many obstacles throughout life and his playing career. Jim Abbott grew up being picked on since he didn’t have a right arm. When Abbott was younger he would use a steel hook as right hand and other children were afraid of him. Also, they called him names like Mr. Hook.
Nathan Hale was born on June sixth, 1755, in Coventry, Connecticut. Richard Hale and Elizabeth Hale were his parents. Nathan had nine siblings. Enoch Hale was the most acknowledged sibling of Nathan Hale. Education was important to both of them. In addition to learning, Nathan was interested in wrestling, football, broad jumping, and women. Resources state that he was “the idol of all his acquaintances”, which was the reason for everyone’s admiration for him. This was one important part of Hale’s remembrance.
I have many things that I love in this life, one of those things is wrestling. I have been wrestling for seven years and I have developed quite the passion and love for it. Wrestling has always been an interesting sport for me. Growing up in Oregon I watched my uncles wrestle in high school. I watched both of them win their state tournament in their respective weight classes, this is one of my fondest memories of my childhood. One of them went on to wrestle division one, I thought this was the coolest thing in the world. I looked up to my uncles and wanted to be just like them. I did not always wrestle though. The process of pursing my dream as of becoming a wrestler started of with basketball, then went to a rocky start, then being on Worland High School wrestling team.
David Taylor is a 3 time all American. He’s one of the most dedicated wrestlers in Penn State history. Once you watch him wrestle you become an instant wrestling fan his motion his non-stop. He wrestles with passion. David has a national title also a Hodge trophy going into his final year as a Nittany lion. David has had a pretty good summer, making the U.S national freestyle team and the World University Games team. Taylors record is 34-0. He graduated this year. He’s known as magic man when hes on the mat. He ended his college career of 134-3.
Misty Copeland is a African American principal dancer who has worked hard to reach where she currently is now. The way she grew up, you would never think she is the person she is now. Even as a child she never that she would be where she is now.
Some forms of inspiration are driven from defeat. The Garden City’s football team’s catalyst before their football game was, “Having lost to the rival Red Devils in each of the past two seasons was motivation enough for Garden City, Which rolled to a 68-20 victory that ended by the 45-point mercy rule late in the fourth quarter”(Whitson 1). Having lost two seasons in a row by the same team, caused each player to exert themselves to their highest capability to vanquish the Red Devils. The Lubbock tennis team, just like Garden City, was defeated, but the Lubbock tennis team lost at regional finals. “’Last year we fell short and lost in the finals of the regionals to Wichita Falls Rider, and basically we started working for this very thing at that point last year,’ Dotson said”(“Finding Motivation No Problem” 1). Their melancholy was used as fuel to ignite triumph that upcoming year. In the book The Perfect Mile, Bannister embraced this concept when Neal Bascomb said, “Bannister had stepped up his training. His failure in Helsinki had left him with a need to redeem himself- to deal with ‘unfinished business’”(Bascomb 88). “But the sting from his devastating loss at the Olympics had driven him to continue running and to seek the four-minute mile as evidence that his approach to sport still had merit”(Bascomb 242). Jack Dempsey is one of the most well-known heavyweight boxers in the entire sport of boxing. His true name was William Harrison Dempsey but started calling himself Jack Dempsey after a famous boxer called Jack "Nonpareil" Dempsey. Dempsey’s mother and father were both Mormons however his father left the church while his mother remained in the church. Jack remained a Mormon through his fighting career even though it is frowned upon in their religion to fight. He was an orthodox boxer in the heavyweight class. Dempsey grew in infamy in the 1920s when he attempted to defend his title from challenger Gene Tunney.
First of all, Dred Scott was a slave in the 1800s and not like the other slaves. Instead of trying to escape, he worked twice as hard! Of course he dreamed of being free, but not from escaping, but by legal rights. Dred scott was a brave man for suing for his rights, one of the first!
From the beginning of time, before there were written records, scholars believe that men wrestled. "Moreover, almost every known ancient people participated in some form of the game" (History of Sports 14). Originally, men were required to use wrestling skills to defend themselves from beasts of the field and other men. It is from this prehistoric way of life that wrestling was created. From this, men began to practice and create new holds and moves to improve upon the sport. They begin to compete with each other just as young brothers and sister's fight and grapple. So did the people of ancient times. This way of life, protection, and amusement, through growth, progressed into the magnificent sport of wrestling.
There is no other feeling like that feeling you get when the crowd is roaring, because of something you personally have just achieved. To get to those glorious moments in life that you have been dedicated to, whatever it is you are wanting to succeed in whether it is sports, music, acting, and so on, but when you reach that moment of glory you will remember that point for the rest of your life. It all began when I was in fifth grade when my dad was looking for a place that I could box at and could not find a club near us, but ended up coming upon a wrestling club called, Alabaster Youth Wrestling Association at the time which is now known as the Warrior Wrestling Club. So my dad came up to me that day I got back from school and said, “ Hey bud, I found a wrestling club in Alabaster lets check it out.” After that, practice my dad fell in love with the sport and I did as well, because I was a natural when it came to wrestling.
I learned to always keep your honor, never give up, and fight to survive! This book entertained me but I’m not really into the biography style that it was written in. I would recommend the book. The storyline was very interesting just wasn’t the style that I was looking for in a book.
I started wrestling in the seventh grade, and continued to wrestle in high school. I found wrestling to be a great sport to help me stay in shape, but also make great friends. Many of my friends in high school I made from the wrestling team. Everyone is very supportive of one another, through the many ups and downs wrestling has to offer. There are many injuries that one can suffer from such a rough sport. Many wrestlers end up getting injured during sometime of their wrestling career. My wrestling injury came when I was just a freshman on the wrestling team at Bishop Guertin. It was a time of much pain and recovery that I had to endure in order to make it back out on the wrestling mats. I was afraid and in a lot of pain when I got injured for the first time.
Wrestling can be traced back to cave drawings during the ancient times. According to one source,”... wrestling has been around since people started to recorded history. In France there are cave drawings of people that are wrestling that are about 15,000 years old. The Egyptian and Babylonian people had wrestling bouts that were using most of the same grappling techniques, and throws that we know today (Wrestling History). The sport of wrestling came from ancient Greece. It was used as an exercise to train Greek soldiers for battle. Ever since then, the sport has changed dramatically (Different).
My heart was pounding, and all I could hear was a crowd of people cheering for the main event to begin. There was a group people standing gathered around watching in awe, as my opponent displayed amazing pad work for a warm up routine. I wasn’t scared, but the idea of losing in front of a home crowd in Virginia didn’t sit well in my stomach. Suddenly, a burst of energy struck my body, as I had a bit of fatigue from a fight the night before. I was twenty-three years old with the hopes and dreams of a successful comeback. The five years separated from high school taught me a great deal about hardship, sacrifice, and the value of time itself. Against all odds, I dared to return to the ring and recapture a dream frozen in the never ending valley of yesteryear.
