Amongst all of the years in the decade 1963 is a year that would be forever remembered as a tragic year around the world. On November 22, 1963 in Dallas Texas a tragic day in America History occurred as the 35th President John F. Kennedy was shot in the back of a Lincoln Continental. It was 12:30 p.m. in the Dealey Plaza, when Nellie Connally, the First Lady of Texas, turned around and to President Kennedy saying “Mr. President, you can’t say Dallas doesn’t love you,” then President Kennedy responded and said “No, you certainly can’t.” soon after he said that three gun shots were fired, with those being the last words he said. At 10:22 a.m. the 16th Street Baptist Church received a phone call from an anonymous man who simply said “Three minutes.” Less than a minute of the call, the bombs exploded as there were five children girls within the basement of the church. Out of the 5 girls who were in the basement 4 of them died from the explosion 14 year old Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson, Cynthia Wesley, and 11 year old Carol Denise McNair. More than 20 additional people were injured in the explosion, one of them being Sarah Collins who was the 5th girl in the basement, who had 21 pieces of glass embedded in her face and was blinded I one eye. Described by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as “one of the most vicious and tragic crimes ever perpetrated against humanity.” The four men Thomas Edwin Blanton Jr.; Herman Frank Cash; Robert Edward Chambliss; and Bobby Frank Cherry, were not prosecuted until 1977, where Robert Chambliss being the only one found convicted of any crime. Bobby Cherry, and Thomas Blanton were trailed in 2001 and 2002 but both got off with no chargers, whereas Herman Cash who died in 1994, and was never charged with his alleged involvement in the …show more content…

The USS Thresher (SSN – 593) remains still to this day as the world’s worst submarine disaster. This was the first U.S nuclear submarine, lost at sea. At 6:30 a.m. on the they were still continuing test where the Thresher would go 100 feet and depth stop to check communications, as Thresher neared its test depth, communication received a garbled message indicating “… minor difficulties, have positive up-angle, attempting to blow,” and then a final message that included the number “900.” When communication received no more further messages, surface observers gradually realized Thresher had sunk. By mid-afternoon of that day a total of 15 Navy ships were on route to search the area for its remains. At 6:30 p.m., the Commander Submarine Force Atlantic sent word to the members’ family notifying them that Thresher was “missing.” By morning the next day all hope of dinging Thresher was abandoned and at 10:30 the Chief of Naval Operations went before the press at the Pentagon to announce the submarine was lost. President John F. Kennedy ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff through April 12-15 in honor of the 129 lost submariners.
