The Dakota Apartments The Dakota apartments are apartments on the upper west side of Manhattan. These apartments were constructed during the years 1880-1884. The reason why these apartments are called the Dakota Apartments is because, at the time it was built, it was as remote and out of place like the Dakota Territory. The developer, Edward Clarke, introduced the concept of bringing wealthy living to New York City. However, the Dakota Apartments weren't originally meant for the super rich, but for mid to upper class people such as lawyers, and bankers, and businessmen. Other famous people who applied to live in the apartments, but were denied were Antonio Banderas, Alex Rodriguez, Billy Joel and Madonna. Today, Yoko Ono lives in the Dakota. She is an artist and is the widow and second wife of John Lennon. The Dakota Apartments are famous for the murder of John Lennon on December 8, 1980. Mark Chapman was the murderer of Lennon and had shot him multiple times at the 72nd Street entrance after he came back to the apartments after a recording session. Soon after, police and medics arrived and Lennon was taken to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, but was pronounced dead at 11:15 P.M. that night. Five years after Lennon's death, Strawberry Fields, a quiet section of Central Park was officially dedicated to him. Lennon's music gave inspiration and hope to people and his living mission and memory still lives on in Strawberry Fields. This part of Central Park was named Strawberry Fields after one of Lennon's favorite songs, "Strawberry Fields Forever". At Strawberry Fields there are benches and elm trees. Also, a mosaic is seen with the word imagine on it. This is from one if Lennon's songs. The mosaic was created by Italian craftsmen and was given as a gift by the city of Naples, Italy.
