A theme from Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, is that money cannot buy a person happiness. This theme applies to Gatsby himself. Gatsby spends his entire life trying to satisfy Daisy. He obtained an enormous amount of wealth and threw house parties for five straight years, hoping that Daisy will attend one of his parties. Daisy is married to Tom and has a child named Pammy. She falls in love with Gatsby but, she eventually stays with Tom. Gatsby has an obsession with Daisy that he cannot get over. Nick says that Gatsby, “He knew that Daisy was extraordinary, but he didn’t realize just how extraordinary a “nice” girl could be. She vanished into her rich house, in her rich, full life, leaving Gatsby—nothing” (149).
The theme, money cannot buy a person happiness connects to the text, The Bible. In, The Bible, the pharaoh of Egypt has all the riches he could ever want. His life begins to tumble down once Moses comes and God sends the 7 Plagues. During Passover, the pharaoh lost his son and was in deep remorse. He couldn’t be happy even though he had all these riches. This relates to, The Great Gatsby, because Gatsby tries to buy Daisy’s love but, he lost her to Tom. In my life there has always been things that a wanted and never got. For some holidays, I sometimes never got the one gift I wanted or I don’t what I want yet. Also, I wanted to be rich. Unlike Gatsby, I have realized that there were reasons why I did not receive what have asked for. I did not dedicate my whole life to try and buy myself that one game that a wanted when I was five. I realized that I can be happy without riches and all my wants. Gatsby latched on to Daisy and hasn’t let go his whole life.
