What elements of dada and surrealism suggest the influence of Freud? The 20th Century marked a changed in how people viewed the known world. Since its beginning art has played a major role in how people were able to express themselves. The early 20th century brought rise to new and exciting art forms. These were types of writings, paintings and, documentaries that no one had ever seen before. From expressionism to Dadaism types of work ranged by all means of the artist. About the 1920's a new wave of art would soon be seen worlds over. This art form introduced psychology in a new way to look at the conscious and subconscious minds. From the beginning Dadaism and surrealism showed true signs of influence from psychology. Each using new ideas of the conscious and unconscious worlds in each art form. These ideas would come together and form a new revolution of art and science as one in the early 1920?'. As the world opens a new door into the 20th century, the art world is taken by storm. The outbreak of World War I did not stop the creativeness of new century artist. They embraced the war and expressed how it made them feel. Padilla 2 During this time a revolution in psychology was coming to mind. Sigmund Freud was uncovering what we use our conscious and unconscious minds for. He wrote about how the unconscious drives of the mind governed the body. Freud also made it clear in his,? Interpretation of Dreams?, that dreams were significant to every individual. Since Freud was stirring up a new revolution in thinking artist all over the world were taking what he said to mind. These new forms of art or movements served as a changing time in the world?s art forms. Many art forms have been introduced into our culture, but the two that made an impact all over the world is Dadaism and Surrealism. Each of these forms used a new approach at the world of art. As Freudian culture swept the world a group of artist intrigued by his work, called themselves Dada. This simple word had no relative meaning to art or Freud, but this was the way they felt their work could be expressed. People were now open to new and exciting ways of expressing how Padilla 5 they felt. With the advances in both art and psychology it brought about a new culture in artistic form. Surrealist and Dadaist have many key characteristics alike but Freud was truly their equal. Each group felt that the unconscious was wanted desires by that person. Not only did artist express it in their works they brought it to a new a revolution in all art forms. As in the Dada movement they used unexpected ways to express their art and poetry. Every artist used new and uncharacteristic ways of making art. Each one had a new style like the Tzara using newspapers to create poetry and Duchamp using cubism and futurism to mock De Vinci?s Mona Lisa. Surrealism also used Freud?s writings on free association and dream analysis, to glorify the psyche by using it in their work. As the people of the mid 20th century saw an era come to an end, they kept the spirits alive in continuing to make new and obscure art become a reality in such a culture dominated world.
Dadaism is a European artistic movement that went from 1916-1923. It is a movement in art, literature, music, and film, repudiating and mocking artistic and social conventions and emphasizing the illogical and absurd. This movement flouted conventional artistic and cultural values by producing works of art that were marked by nonsense, travesty, and incongruity. The word dada has many meaning in different languages so it is impossible to know which language the art movement name was based from. The dada artist’s outrage was real and it was a genuine reaction to the horrors of World War 1 and the nationalism, and rationalism, which many thought had brought war about. The Surrealist movement unlike Dada was made of components: artist, poets, writers all rallied under Andre Breton, a poet, who’s Surrealist Manifesto in 1924. For Brenton, automatism, hallucinatory, and irrational thought associations and recollected dream images which allowed the liberation the psyche from its enslavement to reason. It glorifies irrationality and gives and gives an objective status to a wide range of fantastic imagery. Surrealism was revolution not only in style but also in philosophy. Surrealism questioned humanity’s entire relationship and perspective with our sense of reality. They argued that in order to give existence any meaning—to give our actions and statements meaning— humans must construct a belief system, a form of reality around us. Yet there are points where humanity reaches a point when the injustice of life gives us a feeling of senselessness. Yet, surrealist wanted to reawaken man’s talents for the irrational, the fantastical, and the spiritual that had been hidden deeply under Modernism and Humanism. Surrealism reconciled all contradictions in thought and in human condition, enabling the mind to leap barriers of reason and dreaming and reason and madness. The surrealist vision searches for a high reality through the mediums of the subconscious. Surrealist art was to reconcile the differences between man—the social animal, and man – the individual as well as the differences between man’s conscious and subconscious. Its task was to bridge the twin components into something newer, a greater reality.

In 1900 , an Austrian psychologist Sigmund Freud produced a work entitled The Interpretation of Dreams, reviewing the idea that dreams allow psychic examination, that the dreams that are happening contain some sort of psychological meaning which can be brought on by interpretation. Freud says that every dream will release itself as a emotional structure, full of importance, and one which may be assigned to a designated place in the psychic activities. According to Freud's original thoughts dreams have two contents, a manifest content which is the dream that one actually experiences and a hidden content which is the meaning of the dream as discovered by interpretation.
Abstract Expressionism is making its comeback within the art world. Coined as an artist movement in the 1940’s and 1950’s, at the New York School, American Abstract Expressionist began to express many ideas relevant to humanity and the world around human civilization. However, the subject matters, contributing to artists, were not meant to represent the ever-changing world around them. Rather, how the world around them affected the artist themselves. The works swayed by such worldly influences, become an important article within the artists’ pieces. Subjectively, looking inward to express the artist psyche, artists within the Abstract Expressionism movement became a part of their paintings. Making the paintings more of a representation of one’s self.
Modern art serves to immerse us more thoroughly in a scene by touching on more than just our sight. Artists such as Grosz, and Duchamp try to get us to feel instead of just see. It seems that this concept has come about largely as a way to regain identity after shedding the concepts of the Enlightenment. “Philosophers, writers, and artists expressed disillusionment with the rational-humanist tradition of the Enlightenment. They no longer shared the Enlightenment's confidence in either reason's capabilities or human goodness...” (Perry, pg. 457) It is interesting to follow art through history and see how the general mood of society changed with various aspects of history, and how events have a strong connection to the art of the corresponding time.
Sigmund Freud's work as a psychologist brought him to an almost unparalleled fame in the psychoanalytic world. Freud can be seen as the predecessor of modern psychology. His views on the unconscious mind were groundbreaking to the 19th century world. He became interested in women's psychoanalysis and the fact that their sexual drive could cause them to become hysterical. During this time the world had believed that humans had control over both the knowledge they retained about themselves and their environment. This was when Freud came up with the idea of the unconscious mind. Through this theory, Freud suggested that individuals do not even know what they are thinking most of the time. In the case of Dora, Freud would conclude that she was sexually attracted to her father, his mistress, and the husband of her father's mistress subconsciously.
Anger arises as a picture of segregation crosses the screen. You smile as you see a picture of a laughing child. Tears fall down your cheek as you watch a scene from a funeral. A picture is worth a thousand words, because even if you have never had a child of your own or seen segregation firsthand, you can have compassion for the people of those events because you have felt frustrated and happiness before. The emotion you arouse are sympathy for those currently going through these events. Dadaists was exploring these emotions in their work by evoking specific reactions in their audience. In the early 20th century several movements occurred in America and Europe, therefore it was an era that characterized by the imperialism industrialization which polarized the nation into two categories of high and the low class. And the western culture dominated most of the world possessions. The U.S was able to have power over their land and they gained high economic and political power. The American did not allow other countries free trade to enter their lands. Furthermore, the Modernism Cultural movements allow many artists to present their styles in a unique form of expression. The use of strong and bright light in Cubism, for example, points to Post Impressionism's role in influencing and affecting the art movement and its contribution in shaping how art is produced and critiqued based on the standards that it had set. Conclusion History repeats itself, and this is reflected in how Post Impressionism’s similarities with the earlier Impressionism act as proof of the cyclical nature of new things surfacing as a reaction to the old existing conditions. There are endless styles and themes in which artists can decide to paint in. Surrealism is a well known art movement that started in the 1900s. Surrealism was created to “change life” said Rimbaud or to “transform the world” said Marx and essentially that’s what it did. By eliminating logic, new boundaries were opened and a new focus was demonstrated by some artists. Surrealism was first seen in writing so this movement didn’t necessarily begin in the art field. But, it did help artists enhance their paintings with dream-like features and this was a form of expression. Along the way, the artists used this to create a spiritual orientation in their artwork. According to Cathrin Klingsöhr-Leroy, the definition of surrealism is “a pure psychic automatism by which it is intended to express, either verbally or in writing, or otherwise, the true function of thought. Thought dictated in the absence of all control exerted by reason, and outside all aesthetic or moral preoccupations.” Artists, at this point, were taking the concept of dreams and fantasy and experimenting with it. They applied it to their artwork creating surrealism.
The early Abstract Expressionists went in seek for a timeless and powerful subject matter, and started looking at primitive myth and archaic art for inspiration. Most of the early Abstract Expressionists looked at ancient and primitive cultures for inspiration. The earliest works included pictographic and biomorphic elements referred into personal code. In a famous letter published in the New York Times in June 1943 by Gottlieb and Rothko which was assisted by Newman, said “To us, art is an adventure into an unknown world of the imagination which is fancy- free and violently opposed to comman sense. In conclusion, the art of the 19th century was composed of a sequence of competing artistic movements that sought to establish its superiority, ideologies and style within the artistic community of Europe. These movements, being Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, ultimately spread far beyond the confines of Europe and made modern art an international entity which can still be felt in today’s artistic world.
Artistic movements are often categorized by a specific aesthetic. These visual choices are usually a deliberate differentiating reaction to the current culture of art. Though most movements can be categorized by an aesthetic set of rules, such as Cubism, Romanticism, Impressionism, Fauvism, etc… Not all art movements can be defined solely within their visual associations. Nearly all major stylistic shifts in art were based on an ideology as well as a visual language. In the Arts and Crafts movement, the ideas behind the movement were more prevalent than a specific visual style. The Arts and Crafts movement not only changed the way people made objects in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but it also set into motion an ideological stance that persists today.
