The French Revolution The French Revolution was a period in French history that brought forth many new ideas that changed the country and guided it to its modern state.The many governments that were put in place have given guidelines that will be examples for modern countries. While the National Assembly attempted to embrace the enlightenment ideas, the committee of public safety and the napoleonic period betrayed many of the ideas put forth by people such as John Locke,Beccaria,and even Montesquieu. The National Assembly embraced Montesquieu’s concept of separation of powers and of Locke's idea of erecting a new government when they feel that the government had previously failed. The Committee of Public Safety was very worried with the idea of a royalist rebellion. Those who believed that there should be a monarch were upset that the Committee of Public safety did not have one. To stop this rebellion the Committee of Public Safety decided to kill those who opposed the revolution. This time period in which they began to kill the rebels is now known as “the Terror”. Steven Otfinoski explains the reason behind the “Terror” “ The purpose was to protect the public safety from enemies both in and outside of France” (Doc 34). The biggest supporter of the “Terror” was Maximilien Robespierre. In his speech to the National Convention he said “We must smother the internal and external enemies of the republic or parish” (Doc 36). This shows that Robespierre wanted to be opposed by no one. This shows his motivation to become the only man who had power in the french government. Robespierre needed a new way to get rid of those who opposed him in a way to set an example to others. This way he found in the Guillotine. This use of the Guillotine betrayed the punishment ideas that were encouraged by Beccaria. In Beccaria's “Essay on Crimes and Punishments” he states “Such punishments,therefore,and such a mode of inflicting them,ought to be chosen, as will make the strongest and most
“Society was cut in two: those who had nothing united in common envy; those who had anything united in common terror.” The French Revolution was a painful era that molded the lives of every citizen living in France and changed their ways of life forever. Beginning in 1789 and lasting ten years until 1799, the people of France lived in a monarch society under King Louis XVI’s rule. He was a very harsh ruler and had many restrictions placed on his people. They eventually overthrow him and become a monarch society. Among his deceptive ways, the people also experienced “The Reign of Terror,” which was a period where many lives were taken by the guillotine. Other revolutionary events included rebellions, constitutions, and groups. One of the popular groups that contributed greatly to the French Revolution were the Jacobins who were led by Maximilien Robespierre.
Beginning in mid-1789, and lasting until late-1799, the French Revolution vastly changed the nation of France throughout its ten years. From the storming of the Bastille, the ousting of the royal family, the Reign of Terror, and all the way to the Napoleonic period, France changed vastly during this time. But, for the better part of the last 200 years, the effects that the French Revolution had on the nation, have been vigorously debated by historian and other experts. Aspects of debate have focused around how much change the revolution really caused, and the type of change, as well as whether the changes that it brought about should be looked at as positive or negative. Furthermore, many debate whether the Revolutions excesses and shortcomings can be justified by the gains that the revolution brought throughout the country. Over time, historians’ views on these questions have changed continually, leading many to question the different interpretations and theories behind the Revolutions effectiveness at shaping France and the rest of the world.
The French Revolution, also known as the revolution of 1789, was a movement that helped shape France into what it is today. The Revolution may have started in 1787 but it wasn’t till 1789 when the revolution actually started to become worse. The Revolution had many reasons for why it started, but it was only a few major things that really made it happen.
Le mont de st Michel is located in France. It is it's own city because it is an island on the northwestern coast. Richard 1 of Normandy ruled from 942-966 A.D. When his rule ended that is when Le mont de Saint Michel was ordered to be constructed, he was the man who ordered the church to be constructed. Twelve Benedictine monks came to Le mont in 966 and lead the city. The monks were attacked by Vikings and run out but the local people stayed and the mont was never abandoned. In 927 A.D. William 1 of Normandy took over his father’s title and supported the mont until his assassination in 942 A.D. He left his wealth to the mont and was used to keep the church going. Then the Dukes of Brittany supported the mont until 1008 when they died but were buried as benefactors to the church.
The French Revolution represents a period in history that brought about a major change in not only Europe but the entire world. The French revolution spanned from 1789 to 1799. It brought about several key changes in not only the economic state of France but also the perception of the Christian church, specifically the Catholic church in France. Its impacts both economically and religiously are still felt to this day. The French Revolution may have temporarily destroyed Christianity in France, however, it acted as a savior for the future of Christianity.
There have been many revolutions throughout history, such as The French Revolution where the unsatisfied wealthy commoners fought for equality and rights against the government. The ideas that the rebellious groups fought for came from an intellectual and philosophical movement during the 1700s called the Enlightenment. The Revolution brought to its end an era where the French Catholic church was allowed to do as it wanted with little to no oversight. Ever since its establishment in France the church had amassed wealth and power by becoming the singular religion of the nation, however discontent grew and masses rose against the institution of the church. The revolution split the country in two, on one side those who supported the church as it always had been and on the other side those who supported the church as it had been redesigned by the new constitution.
The revolutions that swept the world from 1765 to 1815 was an era marked by both relatively peaceful enlightenment based overthrows of repressive governments, and extremely bloody uprisings based on violence and the repression of its own citizens. The French Revolution was a period of political upheaval that occurred in France during the latter half of the 18th century. This revolution marked an end to the system of feudalism and the monarchy in France and a rise to democracy and new Enlightenment ideas. By 1789, when the revolution began, France was in a deep financial crisis due to the debt they had obtained over many years of reckless spending and France was nearly bankrupt. These financial issues fell almost completely on the bottom social class or the Third Estate which made up a majority of the country. Because of this financial trouble, the common people were heavily taxed, leaving many of them in poverty.

It is certainly true of the French Revolution that nothing had its intended effect, least of all the idealism which inspired the revolution itself in that optimistic summer of 1789. The King’s plan for fiscal reform had turned into a freewheeling effort to recreate the nation on a humanistic, rational basis, the results of which would define European history forever. Nothing represents this utopian vision better than the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, which codified a universal law that ranked even above the constitution in significance. The Reign of Terror was a time during the French Revolution hundreds of thousands of people were executed by various means: guillotine, shot, and drowned. The Committee of Public Safety, lead by Maximilien de Robespierre, were in charge of these executions, and with the job of finding anti-revolutionaries forces. Many thought that what Robespierre was doing would just lead to a greater anti-revolution movement, which would in turn increase the number of executions. Others did not take action against the terror; for fear that they themselves might be executed. Those who were still loyal to the revolution saw the terror as a noble cause; they saw it as a way to rid France of anti-revolutionary forces.
