Hitler and Mussolini agreed to the Germans occupation of Sudentenland in September 1938. Then in March 1939, peace broke down when Hitler conquered the rest of Czechoslovakia. He soon afterward started to make orders to Poland, but they resisted at every turn. Notwithstanding the conflict with Britain and France, Hitler decided to invade Poland. In return, Great Britain and France declared war on Germany on September 3, 1939.
In December 1941, Hitler unilaterally declared war on the United States, which consequently added its tremendous economic and military power to the coalition arrayed against him. A second German offensive against the Soviet Union in 1942 brought German forces in the east to the shores of the Volga River and the city of Stalingrad. However, the Soviet Union launched a counteroffensive in November 1942, trapping and destroying an entire German army at Stalingrad. Germany proved u... ... middle of paper ... ...Germany). Despite the birth of the United Nations, the world remained politically unstable and only slowly recovered from the incalculable physical and moral devastation wrought by the largest and most costly war in history.
Two years later, 1941, the two superpowers were pulled into the War. On June 22, the unthinkable happened, Germany invaded their allies, the Soviet Union. Because of this interesting choice by Hitler, the Russians switch to the Allies and fight their former friends. Later, towards the end of the year, the Americans joined the fight. On December 7, a Japanese strike was set into action to destroy the American navy which was docked at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.
The Second World War began in September of 1939 and was between the Allies and the Axis. It began with Germany’s unprovoked attack and conquest of Poland, and involved Britain and France from the beginning. Its origins lay in German resentment at the terms of the Treaty of Versailles (1919), the economic crisis of 1929-30, which favored the rise to power of Fascist dictators, the failure of the League of Nations to gain international acceptance for disarmament, and the policy of imperialism adopted by Germany, Italy and Japan as a means of acquiring raw materials and markets. As a part of the Treaty of Versailles, Germany had to accept full responsibility for the First World War, which then led up to the outbreak of the Second. The reparations chapter of the Treaty of Versailles was universally condemned in Germany.
Some events which occurred in Europe from 1937 to 1939 caused an outbreak of war in 1939. The key events were Germany's involvement in the Spanish Civil war, the successful attempt by Germany of the anschluss of Austria, the Munich Conference that decided the fate of Czechoslovakia which was a result of appeasement policy, the Non – Aggression Pact between the Nazi and the Soviet Union, the invasion of Poland by Germany and the rise of fascism in Europe, particularly in Germany and Italy. This European conflict in 1939 spread into a world war (World War II) by the end of 1941. These European conflicts had spread into a world war by Germany invading France, Soviet Union breaking the Non – aggression pact, Denmark, Luxembourg, Yugoslavia and Greece. Germany also attempted to occupy Britain but failed miserably.
The United States then declared war on those countries. Roosevelt suggested the name United Nations for the alliance that fought the Axis nations of Germany, Italy, and Japan. Although the group came to be known as the Allies, it formed the basis for the peacetime United Nations organization that was established in 1945. After Pearl Harbor, the United States faced a situation as dire as that of the Great Depression. Abroad, the Axis powers had put the United States and its allies on the defensive, with Germany and Japan dangerously close to winning the war.
As the Germans became more powerful, it made the Allied countries form together to take down the Germans before Germany had absolute power over Europe. Hitler was the leader of Germany and he had in mind of taking over as many countries as possible to achieve the status of ruler of the... ... middle of paper ... ...estern front. The USSR took advantage of there being fewer troops on the eastern front and pushed their way westward toward Germany. Eventually the USSR reach the heart of Germany and defeat them. Therefore, D-Day and the Battle of Normandy was an important turning point in the war because it made two war fronts which helped the USSR advance to Germany to end the war.
World War II consisted of the war in the Pacific as well as the war in Europe. In June of 1940, the Germans had successfully invaded France and conquered most of Europe. On the other side of the world, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. America was torn between two sides of the same war. It was time for the United States, Britain, Canada, France, the USSR, and all others being oppressed by Germany to take a stand.
In one major, famous battle, the Battle of the Bulge, the Germans launched a surprise counter-attack, creating a bulge in Allied lines. After months of hard fighting, the Allies pushed back the bulge, resulting in heavy losses and casualties for the Axis Powers. On May 7, 1945, the Germans surrendered when Berlin was taken by Soviet forces and Hitler committed suicide in his bunker. After two atomic bombs and the threat of another, Japan officially and unconditionally surrendered September 2, 1945 aboard the USS Missouri in the Tokyo harbor. World War II was over.
