A Heated Debate, Privacy Does It Matter? When the topic of privacy arises in a conversation many people either avoid the conversation, or they don their dueling gloves and prepare for a heated debate. Some people feel that privacy is of the utmost importance; others simply do not care, “they have nothing to hide.” The truth is each person will have their own set of beliefs and opinions on the matter. Today, the word privacy has become ubiquitous, we hear about it every day; on the news, social networking sites, journals, blogs, et cetera. Everybody should be well-aware of why privacy matters. The government is only trying to protect us. With too much privacy bad decisions are often made. Our social boundaries are more stable than ever. So why care about privacy "…the government doesn't want to hurt me" (Solove 167). In many cases this is all true, but the government in some cases can also harm people, due to mistakes and errors caused by carelessness. What if the government were to accidentally leak information to the public or determine based on activities whether one was a criminal. If personal information is not adequately protected, it will be available for all to obtain. Privacy matters because without it how can we expect to keep our government in check, maintaining our ability to make our own decisions about how our personal information is used. Now that we have discussed why privacy matters, I hope we can all see how too much power even in the hands of someone who might “mean well” is incredibly dangerous. We must hold on to our ability to make decisions for ourselves about how our personal information is used and stored, so we may maintain our social boundaries that are already very fragile. Privacy is very important and is our right given to us at birth. If we don’t change the direction society is headed in, we may not have this freedom we call privacy much
