Cursive Writing
How many of you remember your elementary teacher telling you that you would write in cursive all of the time in middle and high school and that cursive is very important to learn? I do, and I am going to ask, how many of you actually still write in cursive? Today I am going to be informing you about teaching cursive in school and if it?s still worth students time. Many students are not being taught cursive in schools now that the common core does not require cursive in over 41 states current curriculum. If things are kept the way they are, kids may not have a vital part of our history, which is the art of cursive handwriting. As I said earlier a total of 41 states are not teaching cursive in their classrooms. People are arguing that kids need to spend the time that was used touching and writing in cursive or even simple handwriting for reading and writing in computer programing. This is an issue because kids will not be able to read or write in cursive. If we lose that ability, it would be a big loss to our country as a whole. You may ask how this is. If we do not change, and make cursive writing a must, soon citizens of the U.S. will not be able to read the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution the very documents that our country was founded on. If things are not changed, our kids along with the new generations won?t be able to write their name in cursive someday. Can you even imagine that? Like I said earlier technology is so advanced that a legal documents are beginning to be more and more electronically controlled. If we keep cursive in our lives we will still be able to connect with our past history such as being able to read the Constitution. Studies show that handwriting improves motor skills, critical thinking skills, and hand-eye coordination (Tarshis). Believe it or not there is less jobs because handwriting is becoming less popular. You may ask, how can jobs be affected by this? The answer is that many U.S. Postal Services have less buildings and therefore less employees because people are sending the lowest amount of letters and post cards than ever before, for the simple reason instead of sending a post card, many people just post a selfie of themselves in front of the grand canyon on Facebook, for example, instead of sending post cards. As an alternative of sending a happy birthday card, many people now will just write on each other?s Facebook walls. It?s nobody?s fault it?s just a simple fact and quite frankly it is more convent, for most people (Keenan). Sending letters can actually exercise your brain in ways you might not think. Reading and writing letters can help with letter recognition and your brain scans and activates regions involved in thinking and working memory. You may think, how does this help me at all?
