In the contemporary world, globalization has become an irresistible trend. Globalization exists in different forms in ordinary life, such as the desire to learn languages to connect with friends internationally, or the surge in imported merchandise with the best quality at a lower cost. However, Jimmy Carter believed, “Globalization, as defined by rich people like us, is a very nice thing... you are talking about the Internet, you are talking about cell phones, you are talking about computers. This doesn 't affect two-thirds of the people of the world.” Carter accentuated an idea that inspired me to look further into the nature of globalization, which is that we are seeing mostly the surfaces of the phenomenon, or the formal consequences that …show more content…
Christoph Mertl suggested that “The more frequently we use a term, the less we are clear what we are talking about. What is culture? What is a process? None of these very common words is based on a solid scientific definition.” Since globalization has become a worldwide trend, the problem is not that it doesn’t have a definition, but that it has too many definitions. An ordinary person can simply describe globalization as the process of exchanging views, ideas, products and cultural differences. George Ritzer defined it as “a trans-planetary process or set of processes involving increasing liquidity and the growing multidirectional flows of people, objects, places, and information, as well as the structures they encounter and create that are barriers to, or expedite, those flows.” Both definitions might sound different because of the way the words are structured, but it’s apparent that they both mentioned the most basic characteristics of globalization: process of exchanging ideas and products, flows and differences. One obvious result that globalization mostly affects is the global economy, which is the system of economic trading around the world. The intuitive of trading is not as simple as one might think: one country has something to offer, and the others have something to exchange in return. In the end, both …show more content…
Additionally, they were allowed to resign and get away with rewards of billions of dollars. More interestingly, no companies had been prosecuted for the compensation system. The responsibilities and morality of Wall Street firms were again questioned: during the crisis, should the firms have responsibilities to the workers that had been laid off, or simply seek a simple solution such as declaring bankruptcy and get away with the money that affected millions of poor people who once believed in globalization? For that reason, Americans were desperately hoping that the Presidential administration in 2009 would change the bailout policies and would help the distressed homeowners. However, the same Wall Street insiders were appointed again - they are now the economic advisors in the new administration. The example shows a close relationship between the economy and politics - one can intensely affect the other and vice versa. The former Wall Street insiders were appointed again to preserve the institutional knowledge of the financial world, because even though in a formal economy, there are still secrets that need to be hidden from the
The term 'globalization' has been subjected to a variety of interpretations. Though at its simplest it can be seen as how the world has become integrated economically, politcally, socially and culturally through the advances of technology, communication and transport John Baylis et al. (2011).
The process by which people, companies, and governments of different nations interact and integrate with one another is known as globalization. This process is driven by both international trade and investment, aided by technology. The effects go beyond business and finance, in fact, all aspects of culture, politics, the environment and the health of human beings are affected by globalization. (The Levin Institute, 2015)
Globalization contain a series of processes that work worldwide to promote change in the world in which nations and people are increasingly interlinked and mutually dependent. Promoting globalization are transitionally, as we maintain our ties with home example, we do call, texting, emailing, visiting, even sending money out ways to keep ties with home.
Globalization simply defined is the intensification of global interactions. The case studies we have studied depict two of the main types of globalization. Economic Globalization, which is the production, exchange, distribution, and consumption of goods and tangible services, and Cultural Globalization, the exchange of materials and symbols that represent facts, meaning values and beliefs. When Globalization occurs it usually has a major impact on indigenous cultures. Optimists or “champions” state that the relationship between culture and globalization has positive effects as it creates a balance between nations. Conversely, critics state that relationships between the two have negative effects, leading to the loss or deterioration of a native culture. The justification whether globalization is good or not depends on what is being globalized and the perspective of an individual. I would like to look two case studies of globalization, Karen Hansens, Salaula; the world of secondhand clothing and Zambia, and Cricket in the Trobriand Islands to asses the relationship between Globalization and Culture.
Globalization, the acceleration and strengthening of worldwide interactions among people, companies and governments, has taken a huge toll on the world, both culturally and economically. It’s generating a fast-paced, increasingly tied world and also praising individualism. It has been a massive subject of matter amongst scientists, politicians, government bureaucrats and the normal, average human population. Globalization promoted the independence of nations and people, relying on organizations such as the World Bank and also regional organizations such as the BRICs that encourage “a world free of poverty” (World Bank). Despite the fact that critics can argue that globalization is an overall positive trend, globalization has had a rather negative cultural and economic effect such as the gigantic wealth gaps and the widespread of American culture, “Americanization”; globalization had good intentions but bad results.
Globalization is a concept with a variety of meanings making it quite confusing. The concept includes a wide variety of events as well as aspects of personal and social life. However, some scholars have attempted to offer some definitions of this concept: It has been defined as the increasing unification in the economic order of the world via the reduction of barriers to free international trade like tariffs, import quotas, and export fees. Globalization describes the process in which regional economies, cultures, and societies have become integrated via transportation, communication, and trade (Croucher 10). It is closely associated with economic globalization, which is “the process by which markets and production in different countries are becoming increasingly interdependent due to the dynamics of trade in goods and services and flows of capital and technology” (Held 92). However, it is not only driven by economic factors, but also a combination of the economic factors with the technological, biological, political, and socio-cultural factors (Croucher 10).
“Globalization refers to an interdependent world economy in which people in one part of the world interact with people in another part as buyers, sellers, or intermediaries” (Keegan & Green, 2015).
Globalization is currently shaping the world in which we live. It is based on the precept that the world is becoming a smaller place to live. This "shrinkage", so to speak, does not refer to actual land area, but rather to the space that exists between the differing peoples of the world. Globalization occurs through the unification of different nations around the world by either blending socially, culturally, politically, or economically. Social , Cultural, and Political Globalization occur when people from different nations, cultures, or walks of life come into contact with one another, and in the process, close the gap that exists between different groups of people or differing ideologies. These types of Globalization have been able to occur due to certain advancements in communication technologies that have made it possible for people all over the world to be able to communicate more easily and on a frequent basis ( Allen and Hamnet pg 59).
Globalization has become one of the most disputed subjects around the world today. It has been hailed as one of the best things to happen to the world by its supporters, while opponents have labeled it as neo-imperialism or another coming of imperial expansion. Despite its challenges, the positive role it has played in changing the lives of millions of people around the world is unbelievable. The benefits range from creating competition between companies, to cultural diffusion, to being able to bring criminals to justice from the country they seek refuge in and charge them in the country they committed the criminal act. Of course no good comes without evil, there are a few downsides to globalization, but when observing the big picture, the
When the term “Globalization” is discussed, most academics, scholars, professionals and intellectuals attempt to define and interpret it in a summarized fashion. My main concern with this approach is that one cannot and should not define a process that altered decades of history and continues to, in less than 30 words. Global Shift is a book with remarkable insight. Peter Dicken rather than attempting to define the commonly misused word, explains Globalization in a clear and logical fashion, which interconnects numerous views. Dicken takes full advantage of his position to write and identify the imperative changes of political, economic, social, and technological dimensions of globalization.
The term ‘Globalization’ refers to is the integration of economies, industries, markets, cultures and policy-making round the globe. It explains a progression by which both national and regional economies, societies, and cultures have become incorporated through the universal system of commerce, communication, migration and transportation.
Globalization is a quickly developing incorporation of economies and societies around the globe, leading to rising connectivity, combination and interdependence in the social, technological, economical, and political spheres. It is comprised of growing mobility of products, services, capital, labor and technology. Primary forces spearheading globalization are the loosening of markets and the effect of information communication technologies (ICTs) on goods, processes and market operations (Bates & Smith, 2010).
Globalisation is a process of interaction and integration between people of different nations, so that the world becomes more interconnected and interdependent. This process leads to the exchange of world views, products, and ideas across nations. Hence, it has a huge influence in many aspects of our lives, one of it being our culture. According to the Oxford Dictionary, ‘culture’ is defined as the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society. It has evolved and changed positively and negatively since the start of humankind and globalisation is one of its factors. Beneficial impacts of globalisation on culture may include how there will be increased cultural diversity, as well as how there will be increase in harmony
Globalization has taken place in the past when state and empires expanded their influence far outside their border. However, one of the distinctions of globalization today is the speed with which it is transforming local culture as they took part in a worldwide system of interconnectedness. Through globalization, many cultures in the world have changed dramatically.
Loss of group identity and individualism because globalization promotes a western ideal of individualism. This advocate a homogeneous set of values.
