Human beings are impact throughout the years by their cultural forces that have shaped their identities. However, people culture varies because, for example, the country that they or their parents originate. Nevertheless, there are always some forms of similarities among them. Some for example, are the foods they eat, the music they listen to, how they are raise, among others. As for me, I am highly impacted by my cultural forces, which as embedded in me by my parents’ upbringing, which is to get a college degree, stern words of encouragement, and how to obtain my goals. My father, like many Asian immigrants, left India to pursue his educational goals in America in order to provide a better life for his family. He arrived in the U.S. with fourteen dollars in his coat pocket, a suitcase in his hands, and a will to succeed. For my father, in a place like America where opportunities were plentiful and where hard work actually paid off there was no excuse not to succeed. The practical translation of this belief meant that if his children worked hard in school there was nothing they too could not achieve. As such, in my father's household, not doing well in school was not an option.
In life there are several factors that influence us. May it be with whom we surround ourselves with. But what we may not realize is that our culture or environment may influence us.
Immigration has existed around the world for centuries, decades, and included hundreds of cultures. I was raised in an encouraging household where both of my parents greatly valued education. Although they were high school graduates, neither could afford to attend college; a combination of family and financial woes ultimately halted their path. As a result, my parents frequently reminded me that getting a good education meant better opportunities for my future. To my parents, that seemed to be the overarching goal: a better life for me than the one they had. My parents wanted me to excel and supported me financially and emotionally of which the former was something their parents were not able to provide. Humans start to expose to culture the day they are born and they learn cultural values through their everyday life interacting with the people and environments around them. The cultural values often help us in guiding our behaviors and provide us a context in helping us identify the proper way of responding to various situations. Culture can help to determine human behaviors because culture can influence individuals’ psychological processes, development of self, and motivation.
