It took Martin Luther King Jr. five minutes to give his “ I Have A Dream” speech. This speech had one of the most powerful and long lasting effects on the United States culture. The ideas and thoughts of his speech are still studied in classrooms all around America. A speech that lasted only five minutes had an effect that lasted a lifetime. One event can change a generation of people for the rest of their lives. The Vietnam War is a perfect example of this idea. The war lasted roughly twenty years and had many short term and long term cultural effects that would change the future generations in many ways. Throughout this paper the causes and effects of the Vietnam War on the culture of the united states will be looked at from many different viewpoints. To understand the effects of the war you must first understand the background information.

America had to send supplies, weapons, and soldiers over to aid the south vietnamese. None of these things come cheap and America had to pay for it some way. The total spendings of the war would add up to be 173 billion dollars total. Counting the money it costed to aid the vietnamese it added up to be over 300 billion. There were also many disadvantages on the economy which were not taken into hand. The US had to stop all production for consumer goods in factories so that they could make military surplus cause a direct hurt on the economy. The high cost that america was putting out had huge effects on the american economy and almost caused total economic failure in the 70’s.
