Intoduction :
Culture is defined as the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society. Culture defines the originality of a person of a state. But why is it so important? What are cultural differences and why does it lead to conflicts? Culture is important because, it is a bond which keeps the people of a nation together or unique from the other nation. A community’s culture is served by the community’s art, literature, language and the religion.

Though Hindi is the mother tongue of an Indian but people talk in their native languages only. The culture of India defines the life of people here. India's languages, religions, architecture, food, and art differ from place to place within the country. The Indian culture, is a mix of several cultures which is spread across the country and it has been taken up from the history which is millions of years old.
Though the Sri Lankan’s culture has also been take from various factors, Sri Lanka dint fail to retain their ancient culture. Sri Lanka is densely populated by south Indians and thus the influence is also obvious. But Sri Lanka has also been influenced by Buddhism. Not only Buddhism and south Indians, but also from the colonization by the Portuguese, the Dutch, and the British. Sri Lanka, like India is rich in culture. Arts, fine arts, music, dance and visual arts are still present in the aroma of the Island. But it is different from one another. According to the U.S library of congress, Sri Lanka was dominated by people following Buddhism and almost all of them spoke Sinhala. From birth, children are taught about Buddhism and the relationship between them and the cultural and politics of the place. Buddhist monks are given great respect and participate in services at the notable events in people's lives. To become a monk is a highly valued career goal for many young men. Throughout history, there have been various perspectives of multicultural differences. According to Meriam Webster (n.d.), culture is “the beliefs, customs, arts, institutions, and the thoughts or products of a particular society or group.” Unfortunately, African Americans, Native Americans, Italians, Irish, Jews as well as various other cultural groups have been profoundly discriminated against and negatively stereotyped (Good Therapy org.). With the frequent mingling of cultures in educational settings, the workplace, and in the social arena, we are bound to encounter cultural differences.

Throughout the years, humans have shaped the world and many societies have developed different cultural patterns. Culture is the way of life of a society. Through culture, we learn how to collaborate with groups of people and we learn how to survive and adapt to changes. It is composed of values and beliefs that are shared by other members of society, as well as species survival. Every culture has different cultural elements that are vital to one’s survival in a certain place.
Huge population, pollution, peace, snakes, saris, dance, curry, and religion are probably the most popular words that come up when we think about India. India is a well-known country. Although it is a relatively poor country, it has a rich and diverse culture. India is populated by approximately 953 million people. It has been a home for many religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism, Islam and Christianity. The first four mentioned above originated in India (Finegan 151). Seventy percent of the populations are Hindus. In fact, Hinduism is the oldest and third largest religion in the world. Hinduism has deeply influenced Indian society, for several reasons: it has a long history in this place, it is related to the social status of Indians, and it is integrated with the cultural aspects in India.
According to the Cambridge Dictionary Culture id defined as »the way of life, especially the general belief and custom, of a particular group of people at a particular time.« (1) Culture also can be defined as the total body of tradition which born by a society and transmitted from one generation to another generation. It thus refers to the language, norms, symbols, values and standards by which people act. It is that complex whole which involves law, custom, morals, art, belief, knowledge and any other habits and capabilities which acquired by a member of society. According to the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition(CARLA), culture is illustrated as the shared pattern of interaction and behavior, affective understanding and cognitive construct which is learned through the socialization process.
Culture is defined as “the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group.” Our textbook specifically mentions beliefs, values and traditions, among other aspects, that are passed throughout generations. A culture may evolve through the years with the addition of technology and other influences from the globalization of our society.
What is culture? Culture is identity; it’s the indigenous or non-indigenous ideology, habits, customs, appearances and beliefs that people are either raised by or adapt to from different nations surrounding. It is a network of knowledge shared by a group of people. Culture consists of configurations, explicit and implicit, of and for behavior obtained and spread by symbols establishing the distinctive achievement of human groups including their embodiments in artifacts; the vital core of culture consists of traditional ideas and especially their attached values. Culture systems may, on one hand, be considered as products of action, and on the other, as conditioning influences upon further action.
Culture has a variety of meanings in our daily lives. Culture is defined as objects created by a society as well as the ways of thinking, acting, and behaving in a society (Macionis). Culture has a variety of elements that is important in understand. To grasp culture, we must consider both thoughts and things. Culture shapes not only what we do, but also what we think and how we feel.
1. What is Culture? What I personally think is that our culture is the foundation of who we really are in life. It identifies the lifestyle and pursuits that are practiced in the group of people we relate with in our society. In other words, an important concept to understand is that cultural beliefs, values, and practices are learned from birth first at home, in church, and other places where people meet. Some practices and beliefs in human culture include religion, music, sports, food, health beliefs, and art which represent the values we have in life. Also, our own culture is diverse and it is significant to look with in and identify what we value the most, what is essentially needed, and how we see the world. It is our remaining tool and we don’t even realize it is needed to communicate and socialize with others.
Culture is the totality of learned, socially transmitted customs, knowledge, material objects and behavior. It includes the ideas, value, customs and artifacts of a group of people (Schaefer, 2002). Culture is a pattern of human activities and the symbols that give these activities significance. It is what people eat, how they dress, beliefs they hold and activities they engage in. It is the totality of the way of life evolved by a people in their attempts to meet the challenges of living in their environment, which gives order and meaning to their social, political, economic, aesthetic and religious norms and modes of organization thus distinguishing people from their neighbors.
