Futurism celebrated advanced technology and urban modernity. Destroy older forms of culture and demonstrate the beauty of modern life, the beauty of the machine, speed, violence and change. Futurism was an Italian artistic movement that that began in 1909. It rejected the traditional forms of art that were confined to just the canvas and statutes of old. It celebrated and incorporated the energy and enthusiasm of modern technology: Filippo Marinetti created Futurism. In the launching of this movement, Marinetti took his understanding of space and time, but also commoditized the enhancement of them. This concept helped to shape modernism and the generalized concept of the future through art. He is an artist of many forms: Painting, music, plays, film, scenic design, and dance. Although these movements are quite different in appearance, they both wanted to challenge the traditional customs of the time. Whether it be eliminating conscious editing of thoughts by the Surrealists or producing a new sophisticated approach to design in Bauhaus, these movements created unique artworks that reflected the times of change they existed in.
Filippo Marinetti was an Italian author and poet from the early 1900's to the mid-1920's. Marinetti was the founder of a style of art that started in about 1909 known as Futurism. Futurism is the product of the Cubist movement even though it didn't originally start out that way. Originally, there was no specific style to the Futurism movement and it took inspiration from a lot of other periods such as Symbolism and Post-Impressionism. Futurism became of on the more important stepping stones of 20th century art history. Artists such as Umberto Boccioni, Giacomo Balla, Gino Severini, and Carlo Carrà took Marinetti's ideas and turned it into art, exploring the concepts of space and movement. Marinetti founded the Futurism movement with the Futurist Manifesto in which he says "We want no part of it, the past...we the young and strong Futurists!" Dadaism is a European artistic movement that went from 1916-1923. It is a movement in art, literature, music, and film, repudiating and mocking artistic and social conventions and emphasizing the illogical and absurd. This movement flouted conventional artistic and cultural values by producing works of art that were marked by nonsense, travesty, and incongruity. The word dada has many meaning in different languages so it is impossible to know which language the art movement name was based from. There were also parallel movements in Russia and Britain, although in Britain it was mostly known as Vorticism which was slightly different and happened later, it was influenced by Futurism. During the first decade of the twentieth century, a group of young Italian painters united together, under the influence of poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. Abstract Expressionism gets its name from the combining of emotional intensity and self-expression of German Expressionists and the anti-figurative aesthetics of abstract schools where Futurism, Bauhaus and Synthetic Cubism came from. The term Abstract Expressionism was applied to any number of the artists in New York who each had quite different styles, such as Pollock’s “action paintings” which had a very busy feel to it, which was different both technically and aesthetically to Willem de Kooning’s grotesque “women’s series”, which was rather violent and not particularly abstract, and Mark Rothko’s block work which was not very expressionistic, but yet all three were classified as Abstract Expressionists.
In conclusion, the art of the 19th century was composed of a sequence of competing artistic movements that sought to establish its superiority, ideologies and style within the artistic community of Europe. These movements, being Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, ultimately spread far beyond the confines of Europe and made modern art an international entity which can still be felt in today’s artistic world.
