It seems as though Steven is having trouble keeping the attention of his students which might be a result or boredom or lack of understanding the material, luckily there are many strategies that he can use to catch and maintain the attention of their students. First Steven should realize that attention difficulties can be related to genetic, environmental and developmental factors. Training and consistency strengthens their ability to pay attention to different things in their environment and can improve academic ability. In order for students to think critically they must be taught, so the first step in fostering critical thinking is to make students aware of what it exactly is. Critically thinking involves evaluating the accuracy and worth of information as well as deconstruction of an issue or argument. After the basic understanding of critical thinking has been learned and his students are able to identify its characteristics he will be able to use specific instructional strategies such as questioning during class discussion to help them further develop it. Class discussion, which involves questioning allowing students to critically think, can take 3 forms: spontaneous, exploratory, or issue-specific. All forms allow students to participate whether from interest, to gain clarity on understanding, or to further explore an issue. If a Steven waits about 3 seconds after asking a question they are likely to get responses from students and as a result there is greater student-to-student interaction. Another strategy that could be used is to have his students write after discussions because it allows them to provide more insight and add new thoughts or even ask questions for those who might be shy.
