Grammar skill is such an important aspect of writing because it makes written content more readable. Through my instructor’s helpful critiques of my writing, I became aware of my issues with proper composition and grammar. I accomplished this by taking the small steps to become a better writer. I now learned take time to prepare and revise my papers. I have spent many hours working on my grammar from comma rules to proper capitalization.
Mistakes that I did gave me a reason to improve myself for the next level of writing. Despite all of the good progress I made by taking this class, I still have to make more improvements to make myself a better writer. One of the improvements that I have to do is my grammar skills. Improving my grammar skills a bit more would make my essay easier for the readers to understand. Constructing a better sentence is also one of the things I should work on.
To fix that, I always have to reread what my essay says and make sure that the reader will understand it. The revision process has improved my writing because the very first time I edited and revised my essay in this class, I caught many errors that would be points counted off if I had not caught them. Now, I am able to check for those errors that I know I am making and fix them as I am writing so there will be fewer errors to correct when I revise and edit. These strategies help a me make my papers better because while writing, I don’t always see the mistakes that I am making. Doing edits and revisions help me see these mistakes and I will use these strategies in college because it is a tactic that does not take long, but it goes a long
The statement that stuck out the most was that I had way too many mechanical and grammatical errors. He also stated that I had done a good job analyzing the text, but I had missed the point of the assignment. With my new found determination to prove to myself that I could hone my skills, I went back and evaluated my writing. I quickly realized that I did in fact stray from the ideas of pathos, ethos and logos which was the purpose of writing essay one. I began to think of a way to solve this issue and came to the idea of having the rubric of the essay next to me while writing.
Throughout high school writing papers and essays were very difficult for me, almost every assignment I would seek help from others. Whether it was from my fellow students, family members, or teachers, their advice helped me tremendously. My senior year I took a Creative Writing course, which I believe helped me a lot, because I would struggle to write a paragraph, but now I can put a paper together. Coming into college I knew writing was a major skill to conquer, but I still feel like I can improve a lot yet. Furthermore, my critical reading skills need much improvement, I have no problem reading a passage or book; however, I do have trouble with comprehending what I read.
The one skill that I have vastly improved upon in this class is organization. I have always struggled to put my thoughts to paper in a manner that is coherent and as per the assignments. The skill of creating an outline, which I have developed in this class, helps me considerably. Indeed, an outline helps me to properly organize my essays, and it enables me to focus my mind on the main points that I want to write about .As I write each paper, I keep reminding myself that other people are going to read it. Therefore, I am aware that I have to provide my audience with a good introduction.
Collecting data for any essay is very important. It helps you analyze traits, gives evidence or explains a situation, person or a thing. For this particular essay I have chosen argumentative essay to explain the improvement to my writing process because that is an essay I had put lot of time in. Moreover, it was something I was a little confident about because when I read it, it had a weightage of knowledge. While collecting data, I was very conscious about the source and bookmarked them for later use.
Although I have learned a lot and have improved my writing skills tremendously I still feel that I have more to work on. I constantly took all of the criticism that I received from my English instructor and applied these things to the next paper so that I could learn from it and do better than before. Everything that I learned in this course I will be able to use in future courses because eventually I am going to have to write other essays or even lab reports. I also can apply what I learned to my future career because I will have to communicate with my co-workers through business emails which will require good sentence structure and proper grammar. Although I have learned an immense deal of writing skills within this course there some things I feel I can improve upon, such as, introductions and properly heading papers. One of the first skills I feel that I have gained throughout this course is the ability to prove my points in writing assignments. I feel that I have improved on making my readers know exactly the points I want to get across and the points that keep to the topic. For example, on essay number one in paragraph two, I wrote about the reasons of why I felt the stand your ground law needed to be changed or removed. To prove my point one of the reasons I spoke about was the Trayvon Martin incident, of which I felt could affect my readers on an emotional level and get readers to agree with my stance.
Reflective Introduction I began the semester with some knowledge of the different types of writing, and I learned why my audience is so important. Knowing my audience helps me make decisions on what information to include in my papers, how I should arrange my information, and what kind of supporting details will be necessary for my reader to understand what I am presenting. I learned that tone in writing can be very powerful, and I liked how I could express my attitude through my papers. I discovered tones can change rapidly or remain the same throughout a piece of text. The class and I have been working on group activities such as Peer Review Forms, Inquizitive, D2L’s every Tuesday, and four paper packets.
