In today’s entertainment industry, films are aiming to be award winning films and thus, the highest grossing films. There are many aspects that films and creative creations can be the best in, from computer graphics and music to plot and acting. One of the major differences I see between films today and films in the past is the main aspect that they want to master in. Films like Life is Beautiful by Roberto Benigni fascinates viewers like me by its plot, in contrary, films like Avatar intrigues the viewers by its advanced computer graphics. However, I believe that a good film is based on a great plot-a plot that amazes the viewers. In Life is Beautiful, the plot is reinforced by great characters that exemplify Benigni’s intention. A comedic tragedy that explores the idea of the protective power of love and humour-Life is Beautiful-demonstrate its plot and theme through characterisation. Round characters like Guido and Joshua. The main protagonist is Eliseo who tries to protect his family through love and humor. Even in tough times like the Holocaust, Guido maintains his happiness. There are also characters such as Eliseo who is a flat stock character because we always see the elders as people with experience. In this particular case, Eliseo is the only one who sees the Holocaust and its danger. Moreover, Eliseo is a flat character because he retains his kindness until the end even with the Nazis. Other types of characters include stock characters such as Dr. Lessing, a person with power who does not recognise the sins that the Nazis are conducting. Dr. Lessing does not use his power, not even to help his friend. Characterisation reflect both the place and time that the film is referring to but also other aspects of the real so... ... middle of paper ... ...a comedic tone of romance in Rome to the traumatic tone of the concentration camp. Tones are created though both visuals and audio. The slow and low pitch music creates the tone and mood of suspense, danger and horror while when Guido goofs off there is always this repetitive funny rhythm. Similarly, the tone is created from the lighting and colour as well. The concentration camps and trucks are seen as a darker place whereas Rome is a bright and enthusiastic neighbourhood. This all foreshadows the horror of the camp and Guido’s unfortunate death. A film that is the epitome of how fantasy can become reality. A film that reflects my view of how film is used-I believe that film can transform imagination to reality. This is the film that extends the limit of heroism. Heroism is now the ability to maintain happiness even in harsh times. The film that inspired my dreams.

In “The Fish” by Elizabeth Bishop, the narrator attempts to understand the relationship between humans and nature and finds herself concluding that they are intertwined due to humans’ underlying need to take away from nature, whether through the act of poetic imagination or through the exploitation and contamination of nature. Bishop’s view of nature changes from one where it is an unknown, mysterious, and fearful presence that is antagonistic, to one that characterizes nature as being resilient when faced against harm and often victimized by people. Mary Oliver’s poem also titled “The Fish” offers a response to Bishop’s idea that people are harming nature, by providing another reason as to why people are harming nature, which is due to how people are unable to view nature as something that exists and goes beyond the purpose of serving human needs and offers a different interpretation of the relationship between man and nature. Oliver believes that nature serves as subsidence for humans, both physically and spiritually. Unlike Bishop who finds peace through understanding her role in nature’s plight and acceptance at the merging between the natural and human worlds, Oliver finds that through the literal act of consuming nature can she obtain a form of empowerment that allows her to become one with nature.
The film stays in line with classic noir in many ways. The usage of dark sets and high contrast lighting, which creates heavy shadows on the actors faces, makes the movie feel like it all happens at night and in dark alley ways. The story focuses on the inhumane parts of human nature. Each of the main characters experiences some kind of tragedy. For Vargas his tragedy was in dealing with Quinlin who has set out to frame him and his wife. For Quinlin his entire life represented a man consumed with darkness who lives his life with a “Touch of Evil.” Menzies was a hopeful man who looked up to Quinlin but was let down. For the viewer, film noir represents truth, even if it is not a truth that all people would like to hear.

Modern day directors use a variety of methods to hold ones interest. Ethan Hawke and Kenneth Branagh’s created versions of Hamlet that shared some similarities, but ultimately had many differences in respects to an audience’s appeal. An appealing movie is one that has an alluring ambiance and an intellectual stimulus. With these two movie versions, a setting and a mood forced an audience to acquire specific emotions, but Ethan Hawke’s version generated emotions more strongly and effectively. Also, these movies had extremely different uses of music and visuals, but both movie versions incorporated them well for the ambiance it tried to obtain. Finally, both movie versions drew characters to captivate the audience; however in Ethan Hawke’s version, the characters were used so effectively that it was easy to feel involved with them. Film and literature are two media forms that are so closely related, that we often forget there is a distinction between them. We often just view the movie as an extension of the book because most movies are based on novels or short stories. I personally find his movies to be some of the deepest, most well made, and beautiful films in recent memory. However it is Fincher’s take on story telling and filmmaking in general that causes me to admire his films so much. This quote exemplifies that, and is something that I whole-heartedly agree with. I am and have always been extremely opinionated and open about my views on the world and I believe that artists have a responsibility to do what they can with their art to help improve the culture that they are helping to create.
