Critical Analysis: Unbroken Louis Zamperini

What makes a person who they are? Maybe it’s their self concept, self-esteem and self efficacy. Throughout the movie Unbroken Louis Zamperini discovers beliefs he has, his self esteem and questions if he is good enough. In Communication 218 we have been leaning what makes a person who they are and how it effects the way they communicate in there everyday lives. Zamperini will realize his self concept, self esteem and self efficacy throughout the course of the movie. In chapter three of Interplay self-concept is defined as the “relatively stable set of perceptions each individual hold of himself or herself (Alder, 2015, p.70).” I say that self-concept is how we view ourselves whether it be by roles and labels in society, or our physical appearances. …show more content…

Material self is described as the physical elements that reflect who we are as a person. For example material things could be the house, car, or nice clothes that we own without these things we would not be the person that other people view us as. Another dimension is the social self, which a wide variety of selves we portray to the world depending on who we are with. The way we act around our friends is different than the way we act around our grandparents or teachers because we adapt to the people who surround us to know what is socially acceptable and what isn't. Last is the spiritual self which is composed of our introspections about values, morals, and beliefs. What I believe is different from the person sitting next to the left or right of me because we all have different spiritual selves. Throughout the whole movie Zamperini showed that religion is extremely important to him. While stuck on the raft in the middle of the ocean for several days already Zamperini cried out to God saying that if he made it out of the ocean that he would then surrender his whole life to God. Another dimension of self I saw in Unbroken was the social self. While Zamperini was at the prisoner of war camp he needed to behave a certain way in order to not get in any trouble. He did this by obeying what Bird man and the guards told him to do. When first arriving at camp Zampirini is confronted by Bird man and is told to look him in the eyes and so he does, then is hit and told not to look at him. In this scenario either way Zamberini acted he was going to do what was not socially correct. In Interplay self esteem is defined as the “part of the self-concept that involves evaluation of self worth (Alder, 2015, p.70).” Self esteem to me is how we feel about ourselves. Are we proud of our accomplishments in life? Are we happy with our physical appearance or ashamed.
