Throughout history women were taught that they needed to learn how to sing, play a piano, keep up with the latest current events, socialize, etc. in order to maintain their status as a woman. However, they were only taught to learn these various things on a minimal level in order to entertain a crowd, make simple conversation, and appear wealthy and educated. This was especially this case in Iran in the 1930’s. Women were/still are pressured to embody a modest personality and style. Women were especially not expected to be poets and/or film directors. Regardless of the societal standards Forugh Farrokhzad was held to, she had an influential career as a poet thus becoming a bold female voice that was able to express what it meant to be a feminist …show more content…

The male sphere typically consisted of higher paying jobs outside of the house while the “woman’s sphere” included jobs that involved taking care of domesticated issues. Regardless of these separate spheres, Forugh made history as a female and feminist poet. The House is Black did not tell Forugh’s story in the way a typical performance would. There was not someone sitting on the stage reading off a list of all that she accomplished in her life or even several actors acting out each major stage of her life. Though Forugh faced various discriminations due to her gender in Iranian contemporary arts, she was still praised on her ability to write such beautiful pieces. The House is Black is considered feminist work due to its ability to show how Forugh was able to overcome the standards and difficulties society created for her due to her gender and thus become a prosperous female poet. Though she passed at a young age, Forugh was an incredible poet and feminist. Whenever it comes to Iranian contemporary arts, Forugh can be seen as a leader to all other female’s desiring to obtain a career in this field, and The House is Black is an astonishing modern multimedia performance showing just how inspiring Forugh was and still is to all those who hear of her story and/or come in contact with her
