Critical Analysis of Professional Literature The objective of this critical analysis is to discuss four chosen standards from Paul and Elder’s (2009) universal intellectual standards (pp. 8-10). The four chosen standards are relevance, breadth, logic, and significance. These four standards will be used to analysis the article written by Vimala Balakrishnan “Learning via a Social Media Enabled Tool – Do Learning Styles Make a Difference?” In this critical analysis, the following questions are presented to Vimala Balakrishnan:
(1) Could you have used students with other backgrounds other than Computer Science?
(2) Was your study based on a varied age number of adult learners?
(3) How would using social media as a learning tool help the adult

The group of independent learners were confident in completing the experiment alone. The experiment showed the collaborative learners needed to connect with others with similar interests to benefit from the online environment. The learners from both groups were able to learn through the use of social media; consequently, the learning styles emphasize on different factors with regard to using social media enabled tool for learning (Balakrishnan, …show more content…
Another view to consider would be the comfort level of older adults learning via social media. Students in the age range of 21-25 are technological prepared to learn via social media, where as that is not the case for those in the age range 40-45. Students that do not have a background in Computer Science may not consider learning via social media to be beneficial, however, that does not stop higher learning institution from equipping students with the necessary tools to learn via social
The aim of this paper is to explore and critically analysing two research articles. The critical analysis will explain the importance of the study, evaluate design and research method used in those articles. To identify any gaps it will provide the literature review in those researches and possibility for the new study. The project plan, for the possible research will be developed on a potential gaps and the essay will finish with the conclusion.
She worked in a software industry for several years. “Teaching happened accidently,” she applied for a teaching position in-between her jobs and found a good work-life balance from it. Later, Ms.Amarachinta came to Diablo Valley College and became an official professor in computer science department. When I asked for her opinion on how social networks start to influence teenagers, Ms.Amarachinta shares her observation to explain her point, “there are more young students taking computer science courses in recent years. Some of them take the course just out of interest and many others take it for their majors. Although this is the very first course [in computer science], I often have students who are already familiar with programming.” As she noticed the growth in student numbers and their abilities, Ms.Amarachinta attributes such change to the prevalence of internet and social networking. While she feels glad that more and more teenagers are willing to study in this field, she sometimes worries about their behaviors and online safeties, for the fact that they sometimes get into trouble for what they did on the internet. From small things such as sending an in appropriate photograph to big things such as giving out social security number, teenagers “sometimes use the internet negatively and inappropriately.” Since the internet is accessible for

The means of communication in the modern era has drastically affected the public’s perception on how to effectively communicate. A popular form of communication is the smartphone. A study performed by Emily Drago (Drago 2015) showed the reliance on smartphones from 100 students attending Elon University. It was found that 100% of all students had a smartphone or a tablet. 66 students admitted to using their phone two to six hours per day and 89 students agree that there is noticeable effects in face-to-face interaction therefore reducing effective communication. The study also shows the dependency on technology and how it has effected the way students communicate, which can reflect on earlier generations. Zoe Fox (Fox, Infographic 2012) reported that American smartphone owners 50% likely to be 35 – 64 and also showed similar results among other categories such as; Tablets, television viewers and social network/blog visitors. Showing that technology can effect a broad range of ages. As mentioned in the first paragraph social network sites tend to create a weak tie between users, and unsurprisingly most users have an average age of 37 over the popular social networking sites such as; Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn (2012, Social network demographics in 2012).
Social media merged into people’s daily lives in many ways. The younger generation learn and adapt more easily with the fast-paced innovation of technologies, so that they can be more active when getting involved with virtual society created by people who are using the social media applications, such as Facebook, Forums, MSN, etc. As to the middle age individuals, even though some of they are unkindly to some social media tools like Facebook, due to privacy concerns. They are still using other kinds of social media applications to some degree, and take keen interest in using them, as the applications are more convenience then the traditional ways of exchanging information, like e-mails and short text messages. However, compared with the individual users below 55 years old, the percentage of that above 55 years old and still using social media in New Zealand is usually around 30% or less (see Figure 1 below.
After reading all the uses of social media in the educational environment it was determined that any of the uses could be used in an e-learning environment. Social media allows for collaborative learning while providing the ability to capture and record discussions during group activities. As we m...
The advantages of using the social network make it an excellent learning tool through dialogues and collaborations. Class Materials and online cooperation among students foster the creation of a class-room-like learning environments which has many potential benefits that they can acquire. The communication and interaction in learning is reinforced by adding the social networking to the school community; therefore, it results in the overall enhancement of the learning environment.
environment where increased critical thinking and collaboration are possible. A study done by Annetta and Jackson shows that students who participate in social media as part of a class feel more connected to their peers that those students who do not participate in social media type education (Annetta, Jackson, 2011). Social media allows students to not only group themselves with peers who are similar, but also to enhance and link existing peer groups. In addition to enhancing established peer groups, social media can bridge the diversity that exists in classrooms by establishing a “neutral zone” in which students can interact with one another. For many

There are seven learning styles and techniques. The first kind of learner is a visual learner also known as a spatial, this is when someone prefers using pictures and images to understand a topic. The aural learner also known as the auditory-musical person, is a person who prefers using music or sound. There is the verbal learner or the linguistic person who prefers using words, both in speech and writing. Next is the physical learner also known as the kinesthetic learner, the preference of this learner would be using the body, hands, and sense of touch to learn. Following that would be the logical thinker or the mathematical person, who prefers using logic, reasoning and systems to learn. The social learner also known as the interpersonal learner is someone who prefers to learn in groups and with other people. This type of learning style can be great for student in the traditional classroom setting. Last there is the solitary learner or the intrapersonal person. This is someone who prefers to work alone and use self-study methods. This type of learner would best be fit in the online classroom setting. Knowing what type of learner, you are can be important in helping to improve the speed and quality of learning. It can help avoid putting a student in an awkward position. Learning styles can have a great impact on students just as much as the
The popularity of social media is rapidly increasing in the last few decades. This may be due to the students of colleges and universities as well as youth is widely used for global access. Social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook have become a craze for everyone nowadays. In these cases, some students are more concerned about social media or social networks than on teaching by lecturers and will cause affected their academic performance.
“Allowing the students to be given so much access to technology in the classroom may distract students from the students main goal potentially resulting in both lowered grades and lowered retention.” (Gonzalez) Gonzalez believes that social media should be used with precaution and limit how much college students should use social media or else it will affect their academic performance. Although many researchers are concerned with the negative effects that social media can have towards college students such time spent on social media or messaging their friends, there are still some researchers that believe that it is a balance between both student and teacher. “Although schools set rules that define appropriate behaviors with social digital networks, it appears that students and teachers frequently negotiate the boundaries and intersections of these tools and discourses through relationship founded on trust and respect.” (Charles) What Charles is trying to say is that there must be a neutral relationship between professor and student. The professor is the individual with authority inside a classroom then by setting the rules on the first day of class students could know if it is okay to use electronic
Our society depends on knowledge. A new way to communicate this knowledge quickly is through social media (The Power of Social Media 1). Learning through social networking is very useful because the participant can learn the things he wants at the rate he desires (The Power of Social Media 1). Several social media sites have become largely popular, like Facebook and Twitter. With new sites being created year round, it is quite obvious that social networking sites will be prevalent for a while (The Growth of Social Media 1). The main reason social media has become so common is because of its quick access. Anyone can know virtually anything he desires if enough time and effort are put into finding that info (The Power of Social Media 1). Knowledge alone has a very powerful aspect (The Power of Social Media 1). As humans, we long for a sense of knowledge because we are curious beings. People want to know what is going on around them. Not only does knowledge provide a sense of satisfaction, it also expands our options. (Phoenix 1). The more options there are, the more freedom a pers...
