Those who want to be involved in the criminal justice system can confuse criminology and criminal justice. Even those who are currently in school for one of those careers can use the terms interchangeably, but there are distinct differences. When you're in school to become a police officer, you're not in a program for criminology, and if you're looking to have a career as a crime scene investigator, you're not taking criminal justice courses.

A person with a degree in criminal justice can become a part of the court system too. They might be tasked with keeping criminals in line while they're in the court house, or as part of their parole out of prison. They are part of the system of justice that puts people behind bars. It could start on the street with arrests, continue to the court system and end with the person in prison. Anyone along the path from the streets to jail could need to have a degree in criminal justice.
There are also other kinds of officers that are tasked with keeping order in the world. They might be an air marshal, immigration officer or border patrol officer. Whether it's a patrol officer on the streets or a prison guard, the person who studies criminal justice will be dealing with criminals and crimes in an intimate way.

The correctional officer’s main focus is to keep the inmate safe and secure, meaning to keeping the inmate safe from hurting themselves and others and also from being injured from other predatory inmates. They have to be consistent in their discipline, if they aren’t they will find themselves really struggling with trying to survive in a day of work. Criminology is the scientific study of the causes and prevention of crimes. Criminology also uses a vast amount of theories to explain peoples’ actions, mental state, and their drive for committing crimes. Some crimes have monetary benefits, while other crime are committed in revenge or in spite of another, which would be called crimes of passion. Because it can be sometime difficult to understand why certain crime are committed, the only thing we can do is use theories to better decipher thoughts, morals, and reasons behind committing crimes.

Duties of Police officers are generally to apprehend criminals,prevent and detect crime, protect and assist the general public, and the maintenance of public order. In order to become a police officer one may need to go through some of the application process requirements. Some of them are to be at least 20 years of age,be a US citizen, be mentally and physically sound, no history of criminal or improper conduct, and a High school Diploma or equivalency. For example, if a murder is committed, criminologists are called to look at the motives and evidences that leads to the cause of this criminal behavior. This occupation is based on scientific study of crimes and criminals. The future of criminology is positive due to the high demand for employees in this field. The history, work, and future of this field have made criminology to become an important career in the upcoming centuries.
One of the biggest concerns of criminology is the reason why the criminals commit the crimes that they do. Whether it’s due to a mental disease or genetics. Even if the criminal is healthy and has been planning it for months analyzing the consequences and results. Could the society that the criminal has grown up in ever be at fault causing him to act the way he or she did? People have been trying to find the reason that criminals commit these crimes for many years, and the numbers of theories that have been come up with looks to be the same number of criminologists. A criminologist is “one who studies the biological and sociological causes and consequences of crime and criminal behavior (such as the effects of mental defects and social environment).” Their job is to figure out why criminals acted the way they did and how to change the person in order to not repeat it, in other words rehabilitate them. Rehabilitation teaches the prisons to live a better life when let out instead of being punished in prison. When a criminal commits a crime the reason for the action is a very important part of the case and after the prisoner is behind bars, then they can find a solution for the crime to not be repeated by the same convict.

Therefore, those who study and carry out its theories are considered scientists. Criminal justice is one of the most important majors one can study due to the necessity to keep the streets safe and clean. From street cops, to state troopers all the way to criminal psychologists the criminal justice system is a very important part of modern society as it keeps us safe from murders, rapists and various other criminals. The street cops are the ones that are out on our streets protecting every citizen. It can be as simple as writing a parking ticket on a car that is illegally parked, to arresting murderers and rapist in a quiet neighborhood in the suburbs. The cops are the ones that are keeping our streets more safe for families everywhere. The main thing I want to learn about Criminal Justice is where I can go with my degree. By studying criminal justice I would like to be able to pursue my dreams of becoming a Drug enforcement agent so that I can help make neighborhoods safe and take bad people off the public streets.
