Research regarding the criminal justice system has many components, but most importantly it relies on the study of interactions and movements between people. This allows insight as to how people operate and thrive in the world, including those who are reintegrating back into society. In order to accomplish this, researchers must be direct and concise in regard to the definitions that will help guide and anticipate them in their observations. Also, researchers must be aware of his or her biases before attempting to make any sort of observation to ensure that their findings can hold merit. The purpose of this paper is to delve into the practice of observation and step into the shoes of a researcher. I will be focusing on observing interactions …show more content…
First and foremost, I must be aware that everyone has their own personal definition of what respect and disrespect look like. Throughout this paper, I will utilize my definitions and subsequent explanations of said behavior. Thus, I will be able to make conclusions based on my observations. Proper observations require clear and concise definitions of what is being observed. By doing so, this ensures that the researcher, including myself, can come to terms with and acknowledge our biases. This then allows an understanding how to quantify and evaluate observations and findings properly, thus resulting in merit. To uncover my own biases, I must define and understand what respectful, disrespectful, protective, and status cuing behavior means to me. Respectful behavior does not have a universal and clear-cut definition. According to Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary respectful behavior is "marked by or showing respect or deference" to an individual. However, this is a very vague and broad definition that is not helpful. In my book respectful behavior is denoting special reverence to those of authority or have more …show more content…
The first place that I decided to observe was the IC. I chose the IC because I work there as a student worker. As a student worker, I have many interactions with the general student population and regular everyday visitors. I thought it would be interesting to see how Loyola students behave, especially in a campus setting. Then I can determine if there is any significant difference between normal visitors and students. I observed two different shifts to see if there is any variation throughout the day. I decided to compare my shift that I have at seven to ten in the morning to my four to seven evening shift. As for my other two places of observation, I decided to observe the Red Line from Loyola to Chicago which most students get off at to get to the downtown campus. I chose this to see how students integrate with the public. Also, the Red Line is filled with many types of individuals thus creating a true representation of Chicago. The final place of observation was getting off the Red Line at Grand and State and walking to the Chicago River on St. Patrick's Day. I thought this would be an interesting observation pick because I wanted to see the difference between how people normally act on any given day as opposed to how people behave on a holiday, especially college students. As a part of the Loyola community, I thought it would be interesting to see how Loyola
Ethics is “a branch of philosophy concerned with the study of questions of right and wrong and how we ought to live” (Banks, 2013). Also it involves making moral judgments about what is right and or wrong, good or bad. In the process of everyday life, moral rules are desirable, not because they express absolute truth, but because they are generally reliable guides for normal circumstances. Ethics or moral conduct, are of major importance in the criminal justice field today. If the police force condoned unethical behavior, there would be very little, if any, justice being served. A system of rules and principles helps to guide in making difficult decisions when moral issues arise. Ethics has been shown to be a central component in decisions involving ethical dilemmas. It is “concerned with standards of conduct and with “how I ought to act”, and standards of conduct may vary among different societies” (Banks, 2013). An ethical dilemma arises only when a decision must be made that involves a conflict at the personal, interpersonal, institutional, or societal level or raises issues of moral character. Richard Hare argues that we initially use an intuitive level of moral thinking when we consider ethical dilemma. There are “six steps in analyzing an ethical dilemma and they would be as follow” (NASW, 2014):
This is greatly frowned upon where in the military respecting a higher officer is strongly enforced. The disrespect and lack of obedience in this situation is logically an effect of Kaffee’s self-entitlement. Milgram may explain Kaffee’s entitlement from a review of his own experiment. He can argue that the subjects in his experiment were established with a sense of entitlement when they are briefed that the success of the experiment depends on them and their choices (Milgram 78). Milgram would connect his subjects with Kaffee by effectively explaining when Kaffee is confronted about his father and in result praised for having such a great man as his father, he takes this as praise of himself from coming from such a family. Logically he adds self-importance to himself resulting in entitlement. In support of Milgram’s claim, the article of “Entitlement Predicts Sexism,” collaborated by Case Western Reserve University, would add the addition of the connection between sexism and entitlement. Studies mentioned by the article would support the opinion that Kaffee not only felt entitled above her but felt as a man he was not required to show her respect (Entitlement Predicts Sexism). Ross and Nisbett, authors of “The Power of Situations,” state that people tend to place more value on the personal traits of a person rather than giving consideration to the

It is in feeling respected or disrespected that people make decisions about how they feel about themselves, others, and the world in which they live

Respect is when you have a deep feeling towards someone or something elicited by their abilities. Things like not stealing, getting your job done, waiting for breaks to do personal stuff, and things like that.respect are always nice and outgoing.
Eight years ago as I was preparing for my middle school graduation, I remember my homeroom teacher presenting each student with a parting gift. It was an envelope and inside of this envelope was a strip of paper containing notable characteristics of the respective student. When I opened mine, it read “—thoughtful and extremely perceptive of others and her environment. She is intelligent and has varied interests and opinions that hardly anyone knows about. She is an excellent student and a loyal friend.” Though I did not consider the significant meaning of these words at the time, when the paper resurfaced a few years later, I read the paper again, this time with deeper reflection. To this day, I am amazed by how accurate my teacher was in describing
People of color, particularly African Americans and Latinos, make up the abnormally high rate of fifty six percent of all incarcerated people in the United States, though their overall population within the country constitutes about half that (Criminal Justice Fact Sheet). There is great debate as to why this exists, however the association between people of color and crime remains factual. At Bronxdale High School, students are arrested and expelled after pulling the fire alarm. This paper will argue that handcuffing young men of color for the non-violent crime of pulling the fire alarm within the school walls creates a criminal identity within the self of student, feeds the school-to-prison pipeline, limits access to education
Respect shows the value of others. It is a sense of worth or value to another person. It is often nowadays that people show no value to their fellow man. Respect is a huge part of common decency. Respect can help foster a more peaceful environment.
Last week I began my externship with the Metro Public Defender’s Office. I, along with fellow externs, spent Wednesday shadowing public defenders throughout a typical day in the Justice A. A. Birch Building. This was my first time in the Nashville courthouse, and really the first time I witnessed criminal proceedings that were not part of an actual trial. Over the summer I had the opportunity to witness two trials, but one of the main reasons I wanted to work with the public defender was because the vast majority of the criminal justice systems exists outside the trial. I was quickly struck (and repeatedly struck again and again) by how boring and efficient the system is.
Most of my attention is directed at advising students and ensuring students take the correct courses so they graduate on time. The second arduous job related function involves keeping students within the Criminal Justice Program engaged in the coursework and not succumb to quitting because they feel the work is difficult, or they become disinterested in some aspect of the coursework. I accomplish both of the above tasks through current assignments that captures realistic work the students would experience in the criminal justice profession. Since the Criminal Justice field requires law enforcement personnel to present before groups and testify before the court, I conduct several mock courts and realistic scenarios to acclimate the students
Respect is something that needs to be both given and received. There are some people in leadership positions who feel they are better that everyone else and they do not have to show respect to others. This is wrong on every level. If a leader shows respect to his or her team,
Criminology is the study of crime and criminals; a branch of sociology. More accurately, it is the study of crime as a social trend, and its overall origins, its many manifestations and its impact upon society as a whole. That makes it more a form of sociology than a law enforcement tool. But the trends it studies have a huge impact on the way the police do their jobs, the way society treats its criminals, and the way a given community goes about maintaining law and order. The writer will describe and give examples of the three perspectives of viewing crimes. The perspectives that will be highlighted are the consensus view, the conflict view or the interactionist view. Each perspective maintain its own interpretation of what constitutes criminal activities and what causes people to engage in criminal behaviors (Siegel, p.12).
In Intro to Criminal Justice class, I had the opportunity to learn about the Criminal Justice System more thoroughly. I learned that there are three components that make up the Criminal Justice System such as the courts, law enforcement, and corrections. Each component has its own role in making sure the the Criminal Justice System is functioning properly. If one of these components are not efficient the Criminal Justice system will not be as strong as it could be.
