The critical issues in juvenile justice course will allow me to analyze the social background of delinquency, law, the history of the juvenile court, and etc. (Kaplan University, 2016). Upon completion of this course, I will know how the juvenile court operates and why it operates the way it does. As a case manager this knowledge will be helpful if I decide to work within the juvenile justice system.
The community-based corrections course will supply me knowledge on some of the commonly used community programs, which programs are effective, costs of community programs, and etc. (Kaplan University, 2016). Upon completion of this course I will know the challenges community-based programs, parole, and etc. are facing. This is relevant to my career, because I will have to provide inmates with leads in the community for possible employment, housing, support groups, and
Correctional program writing nowadays is at a level of efficiency that surpasses earlier outlooks. In territories all over the United States, there are several curriculums that use research-based curriculums to teach, instruct, and inspire inmates. Disappeared are the days of hit-or-miss execution of curriculums that seemed good, but over and over again just occupied time for the inmates. The previous evolution happened for several reasons (Corrections Today, 2010). The largest wake-up demands was the claim composed around thirty years ago. The statement made was not anything works in corrections systems, mainly rehabilitation. Even though this commonly revealed report was taken from its context, it did in detail carry some notice to the mystery that several penitentiaries were not operational as change
Ever since the start of using courts, the main goal of it was to deliver a fair environment where the accused could defend themselves and show the jurors that he/ she did not commit the crime that they were accused of. Sometimes this system fails us and they sentence an innocent man to jail for something they didn’t commit. The activity that I observed in the field of criminal justice was I went to the boulder court house and watched one of the cases that’s was happening that day. As I sat there watching I saw the defendant’s lawyer trying to convince the jurors that his client was innocent, I thought to myself: how can we improve the court room. Sometimes we see some cases where the criminal can be let go because of not a lot of evidence like Casey Anthony. We also might see that the case might be unfair to person being convicted of a crime that they didn’t do. An example of this is the jurors have some past experience with a person of that race and they don’t like them or they already come with a decision before they even hear the evidence found. We might also see a case where the jurors decide that the accuser is innocent even though there’s evidence that proves otherwise. The main point is how we can make
The role of criminal justice professionals is to preserve and uphold the Constitution by enforcing laws, protecting citizen’s rights and promoting justice for all. Police officers in the field of duty must be able to discern situations to be able to act in the most appropriate manner as it relates to their job. In this case study, Officer Smith is threatened with being penalized for making a decision he thinks is good community policing, but his Lieutenant feels he violated protocol. Officer Smith responds to a domestic dispute between an intoxicated husband and wife. Normal procedure would be to arrest the husband and put him in jail until the decision is made whether or not to press charges. Instead, Officer Smith decides to intervene and asks the couple questions about if they love each other, and why they are physically assaulting each other. They respond they do love each other, but the alcohol makes them violent towards one another. Officer Smith then recommends counseling for the couple, as an alternative to putting the husband in jail. The couple agrees to
1 – Question #1: (Ch 5) Child abuse intersects with the juvenile justice system in many ways including but not limited to - sexual abuse, child neglect, family violence, and internet exploitation. One of the most important issues to address when related to the juvenile justice system is child neglect. Child neglect can be defined as a juvenile under the age of 18 whose parental figure(s) and/or person responsible for the child’s well being not providing essential support, education by law, medical or remedial care necessary for the child’s health – shelter, food/water, clothing, etc. Neglect also comes in three forms 1) physical – e.g. lack of necessary shelter, food or water, medical care 2) emotional – e.g. the lack of emotional support or
Ethics is “a branch of philosophy concerned with the study of questions of right and wrong and how we ought to live” (Banks, 2013). Also it involves making moral judgments about what is right and or wrong, good or bad. In the process of everyday life, moral rules are desirable, not because they express absolute truth, but because they are generally reliable guides for normal circumstances. Ethics or moral conduct, are of major importance in the criminal justice field today. If the police force condoned unethical behavior, there would be very little, if any, justice being served. A system of rules and principles helps to guide in making difficult decisions when moral issues arise. Ethics has been shown to be a central component in decisions involving ethical dilemmas. It is “concerned with standards of conduct and with “how I ought to act”, and standards of conduct may vary among different societies” (Banks, 2013). An ethical dilemma arises only when a decision must be made that involves a conflict at the personal, interpersonal, institutional, or societal level or raises issues of moral character. Richard Hare argues that we initially use an intuitive level of moral thinking when we consider ethical dilemma. There are “six steps in analyzing an ethical dilemma and they would be as follow” (NASW, 2014):
Many correctional education programs focus on prisoner’s way of thinking and ability to make decisions. One of the many reasons criminals keep returning to prison is because they are often times released after many years of being incarcerated and have no assistance while returning to society. Correctional education programs are designed to eliminate such way of thinking so prison re-entry rate will drop. Programs such as Preparing Inmates for Re-Entry through Assistance, Training, and Employment Skills (PIRATES) are developed to reduce offenders’ negative career thoughts and teach essential skills in order to return back to society (Musgrove, Derzis, Shippen, & Brigman, 2012). Additionally, such programs are not only beneficial to offender’s mental health, but can also essentially reduce recidivism rate, lower cost associated with offender’s re-entry, support former incarcerated individuals while returning to society, educate inmates so they can get employed after being released, and potentially reduce crime.

Throughout history, the prison systems have had different ways of handling prisoners. Some of the early prisons believed that the public should observe the prisoner’s punishments. Later on, prisons moved to be a place for hard labor and emphasized being able to correct someone. Due to increase crime, the prison system started focusing on trying to control crime (Esperian 319-20). Currently, the United States’ prison system faces high recidivism rates, overcrowding, and rising budgets. It is a cycle that continues to make very little improvement. There is a missing link that needs to be addressed. This link is imprisonment and the lack of education(Kaiser18). Prisons should provide correctional education to help these people change their lives after they are released. Implementing correctional education in prisons can reduce recidivism, overcrowding, and is a cost-efficient investment.
For the issue of high incarceration rates, high recedivisim rates, large amounts of government and tax payer money associated with the spending per inmate in state and federal prison systems, the act of implementing more education programs both incarcerated and as an alternative to incarceration might just help save the future. When looking at the education programs that could be offereed for offenders and incarcerated individuals, there are two basic types; vocational educational training and literacy development education. Vocational training education focus on skills that are directly transferable and related to a workplace. Whereas literacy education courses are based on the traditional education learning model that is centered around reading and math skills (Bazos & Hausman, 2004). These types of programs focus on goals such as the increase in education attainment among the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated population, to increase access to postsecondary education for offenders, to deliver at minimum the basic core education classes one needs to succeed outside of prison or jail, and reducing recidivism and improving the quality of life affected by crime and incarceration, (Borden, Richardson, & Meyer, 2012; Vera Institute of Justice). Research show that these type of programs should focus on.......One way to go about managing educational programs is by offeing community college oppurtunities for both the incarerated and as an alternative to incarceration for certain types of offenders. Community colleges are of one of the best options available because they offer a wide range of academic and vocational degree that are ideal for meeting the unique needs of the incarcerated population. Also, because many ...
