Creativity, Intelligence, Memory, and Learning The purpose of my writing is to “analyze the interrelation of creativity, intelligence, memory, and learning.” Accordingly, I would “describe how this interrelation can be exploited to enhance student learning outcomes.”

The way of thinking varies from one individual to another. Some individuals may feel good about something and decide to create from their own imagery. They need to feel good about it, for their minds to provide feedback about what they may resort of it. Feeling good is part of human attitude in connivance with passion, perception and acceptance. An intelligent person is capable to cognate information and connect them to others. The information perceived by an intellectual being can be easily conceived by another intellectual personality and can be used as learning material to educate the less intelligent individuals. Some intellectual capacities are innate to individuals, but the self-awareness of intelligence may also be innate; the majority of individuals augment their intellectual capacity in the educational setting where they have the opportunity to learn and communicate academically. Memory is associated with multiple brain functions, and the process is neurologically oriented in connivance with the brain. Memory can be activated consciously and unconsciously. There are two different types of memorization: long and short term memory. Information stored under form of short term memory is based on procedural memory. Hence, information can be forgotten shortly after storage; for instance, remembering a phone number. Such information can be easily forgotten if the action is not repeated continuously. In contrast, if the same phone number has been used consistently for many days, and the same dialing action is repeated continuously, the information can be stored under form of long term memory and may never be forgotten. This process is associated with the declarative memory where individuals have control upon memory recall and the action is performed consciously. Memory can be defined as the mental system for receiving, encoding, storing, organising, altering and retrieving information (Coon & Mitterer, 2012). Many a time one is able to remember something, example how to drive a car, yet they are unable to remember a mathematical formula for an examination. People vary in their ability to remember certain things, and research conducted has proven that even infants differ in their memory abilities (Fagan & Singer, 1963). It was discovered by psychologists that memory is not static, but rather it is influenced by ones internal factors and situational happenings to a large effect (Huffman, Vernoy & Vernoy, 1997). This essay will attempt to discover which method of study is most suitable, by listing and explaining various memory strategies, as well as indicating how each method will improve memory efficiency. The process of memory is made up of three operations. The first being Encoding, this is the conversion of information into a form which enables it to be retained in memory (Coon & Mitterer, 2012). The second operation is called Storage, this is the keeping of information until it is later needed. The third and final operation is known as Retrieval, and this is the recovering of information from Storage (Hoeksema, Fredrickson, Loftus & Wagenaar, 2009). These formerly mentioned operations each represent a stage in the process of memory (Sternberg & Sternberg, 2012).
Memory is an important and active system that receives information. Memory is made up of three different stages sensory memory, short term memory, and long term memory. According to the power point presentation, sensory memory refers to short storage of memory that allows an individual to process information as it occurs. Short term memory refers to memory that is only available for a limited time. It is information that is held for seconds or sometimes even minutes. Long term memory refers to memory that is stored for a long period of time and it has an unlimited capacity with the ability to hold as much information as possible. If all teachers dedicate their human potential to their students, then students wouldn’t be scared to participate in discussions in spite of many stumbling barriers. The issues Ernest Boyer discusses in “Creativity in the Classroom” are of current interest not only in American educational system, but in my country as well. So,I would recommend this article to be discussed at teachers’ meetings in different types of educational institutions because the criteria of successful and creative teaching the author identifies in his article are universal and simple at the same time: just be dedicated to your job, care about your students, and don’t be afraid to learn and use new ideas in your classroom. Hence, creativity in the classroom often begins with a good teacher.
Memory is a group of related mental processes that are involved in acquiring, storing, and retrieving information (Hockenberry and Hocenberry page 232). I will be addressing two specific types of memory: short-term memory and long-term memory. Short-term memory holds temporary information transferred from sensory memory or long-term memory. Sensory memory is the first stage of memory and obtains information for a brief amount of time. Short-term memory is also called active memory and is stored in the prefrontal cortex which is the most active part of the brain during an activity. Memory is the brain’s ability to collect, encrypt and retrieve information. There are three types of memory: sensory, short-term, and long term. Sensory memory is the first step of memory. The brain takes in the information but does not store it for more than a few seconds. Short-term memory is the second step where the brain works on the information obtained from sensory memory. Sensory memory is not long-term, meaning it is not stored very long. Long-term memory is the brain’s ability to store short-term memory into information that can later be retrieved. Creativity is a hard phenomenon to be measured, for it is a complex concept that encompasses a lot of domains; it is not specific to a certain field, rather it is manifested in different ways. The process of memorization starts at birth with the development of cells and extends throughout the lifetime through the effects of life experiences and stimulants. Like the rest of the body, the brain is made up of cells. These brain cells are different, more specialized cells. (Sprenger 1). Two major brain cells are the neurons- the nerve cells- and the glial cells which work as the ‘glue’ of the neurons. At birth, the brain contains approximately 100 billion neurons. Although that number remains constant over time, these cells can lose their function if not exercised properly in a process called “neutral pruning”. Learning is defined as “two neurons communicating with each other”. A neuron has learned when it has made a connection with another neuron (Sprenger 2).
Intelligence is the ability to obtain and use knowledge and skills. Intelligence is what assists humans in thinking rationally, acting purposefully, and adapting to the environment. This is a broad description of intelligence. When it comes to specifying intelligence, there is much debate, especially when it comes to how to measure intelligence. There are IQ tests that produce a single intelligence. However, many argue that these tests are too vague and that these tests do not consider factors that play a role in an individual’s intelligence. However, many psychologists argue that there is no standard definition of ‘intelligence’, and there have been many different theories over time as psychologists try to find better ways to define this concept (Boundless 2013). While some believe in a single, general intelligence, others believe that intelligence involves multiple abilities and skills. Another largely debated concept is whether intelligence is genetically determined and fixed, or whether is it open to change, through learning and environmental influence. In order to understand the functional relationship between learning and memory we have to first define what both learning and memory are. Learning can be described as “the acquisition of knowledge or skills through experience, practice, or study, or by being taught” (Merriam-Webster, 2014). “Memory is the means by which we draw on our past experiences in order to use this information in the present” (Sternberg, 1999). Base on this definitions one can conclude memory is essential part of our lives. Without any memory of the past, we would not be able to operate in the present or reminisce about the future. We would not be able to remember what we did a few days ago, what we have accomplished today, or what we intend to do tomorrow. Without memory our ability to learn would not exist. An example that can be used to show the relationship between learning and memory is the study of how a rat behaves in a maze. As we all know rats have been used in experimental mazes since at least the early 20th century. Hundreds if not thousands of studies have looked at how rats run different types of mazes, from T-maze, to radial arm mazes, and to water mazes. These maze studies help scientist study spatial learning and memory in rats. Maze studies helped us uncover general principles about learning that can be applied to several species, including mankind. Since we are born we have imagination and as we grow up this imagination may increase or decrease. Creativity strongly relies in our imagination. Depending on different circumstances people learn to express their creativity openly while other people close themselves and believe they do not have creativity. Creativity is a natural talent that every single human has. Creativity can be used to solve a complex problem in a different manner or just to find innovative ways to have fun. Creativity is thinking out of the box. Even though creativity cannot be taught from scratch there should be a class that is specific for creativity.
