Creativity and Innovation
Today’s organizational settings require creative ideas and new approaches for problem resolution and business’s needs addressing in order to improve the company's competitive position within industry. Recently, dynamic changes in technology has increased the need for creativity and innovation. Unfortunately many companies failed to maintain their success due to the lack of creative thinking. Hence, understanding conceptual blocks which prevent sustainability, imagination, speed, and improvement is essential for organizations to remain competitive and efficient. According to Whetten, constancy is typically the result of implying one approach of thinking about a problem and to have one way of defining and solving the problem. While many individuals perceive constancy as a positive characteristic that shows their ability of control, consistency and trustworthiness, it actually limits individual’s creativity. Constancy includes two types, vertical thinking and a single thinking language. In vertical thinking, the problems is defined in a single way, without considering any other alternative definitions. On the other hand, a single thinking language occurs when there is using of only words in solving problems without considering other non-verbal languages such as symbols, or feelings and emotions. Some people might give up too easily when encountering problems not because of their inability to think or to make inappropriate assumptions, however, complacency occurs because they did not find immediate solutions due to being ignorant, afraid, insecure or mentally lazy. One prevalent example of complacency is non-inquisitiveness. Lack of questioning disabled humans to question or search for data ability to solve problems lack of questioning, information obtainment or data search lead to disable solving problems. One of the vital reasons that refrain individuals from questioning is the fear of appearing naive or ignorant. Another reason is the fear of conflicts due to questioning what the majority accepts without resistance. Nonetheless, solving problems creatively requires accepting the risks of making mistakes or disagreements. During our discussion in the class, couple of students pointed out similar example to what I have experience during my time at working in a company that provides financial services for clients. The employees in this company receive evaluations from clients after each service provided for them. The inquiry includes different questions to make sure that customers are satisfied with the results and that the results match their expectations, and if they have any recommendations to improve the provided services. In this way, the company was able to improve and maintain its growth.
