The morning could not come early enough for young Charles, who awoke before anyone else in the small cabin had roused from sleep. At first light, he noticed that the sky was dark and dreary when he returned from the outhouse. Bluish-black, weighty clouds hung low on the horizon and thunder rumbled in the distance. In his mind, Charles saw him and his mother walking through a storm- it was thundering and lightning; rain fell so heavily, they could barely see five feet in front of them. Crestfallen, Charles surely thought it was going to be a stormy, rain-swept day as he waited on the front porch for his mother to wake and the sun to continue rising. When it did, the dark clouds dissipated and the sky turned brilliant blue. A very mild breeze blew; with it, it carried a bouquet of honeysuckle, Ligustrum, and crepe jasmine… It was going to be a beautiful day on the mountain; Charles smiled.
Noise from inside the cabin drew him indoors to see if his mother was awake. To his disappointment, it was only Jeremiah; he was making coffee.
“Youse is up early,” noted Jeremiah as Charles walked to the table and sat down with a plump. Charles sighed, but said nothing.
“What’s the matter? Why is you a dragging around like a gopher turtle carryin’ around a fifty pound shell on his back?”

Suddenly, she was the girl in the visions! She could feel him plunging his fingers deep inside her, his teeth biting into her breasts. She tried to look at him, but could only see the top of his head. When he raised his head, his grinning lips were covered in blood. He took his bloodied fingers and smoothed back her blond hair from around her face. He then traced her lips with his finger and stuck it into her mouth, trying to make her taste her own blood- Charity was repulsed by his actions and tried to turn her head- he grabbed her face and made her face him.
