Pride and Prejudice
Jane Austen is a renowned novelist whose works stand amongst the greats in literary history. “Austen employed wit, irony, and shrewd observation to advance the literary status of the women’s novel and to address the social and political concerns of the nineteenth- century men and women.”(cited) Of all her works one remains above the rest. Originally entitled First Impressions when Austen began writing in 1796, by the time it was published in 1813 the story would be renamed Pride and Prejudice. (cited) Two hundred years after the novel was originally published it still remains one of the most read and influential novels to date. A contributing factor to the novel’s success is people’s love of the plot. The story gives a special insight to the Bennet sister’s world. Focusing mainly on the courtship between Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy which gets off to a rather rocky start due to the fact that when the two first meet they cannot stand each other.
