The story of David is a story of courage, triumph, and failure. It is a story of commitment, a lifelong commitment to God. “David is called the man after God’s own heart” (Jantz, 1998, p. 128). Throughout David’s life, his love of God never faltered. He was committed to God in his time of bravery when slaying Goliath. He was just as dedicated to the Lord in his time as King, even at David’s worst, when he failed God with his act of adultery; he remained steadfast in the knowledge that God loved him. God looks at our inward appearance, not our outward appearance and he can use the most unlikely of people to bring about His glory. He lived in Bethlehem with his seven brothers and his father Jesse. Unbeknownst to David, God had always had his eye on him and had glorious things planned for his life. Samuel was sent to find a king to replace Saul in 1018 B.C. Samuel was surprised when David showed up and God announced, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one” (Barker, 1985). From this moment on, God’s spirit was with David and they developed a bond that would never cease. With God guiding David, he grew into a strong, courageous man who was not afraid of any situation. After more than ten years of persistent counterinsurgency (COIN) conflict and multiple simultaneous responses to several natural disasters, the United States Army is at a crossroads regarding professional education for its officers and enlisted force. Considering overseas contingency operations in Iraq are due to conclude in December 2011 and by 2014 for Afghanistan, it is plausible that strategic planners are considering the future make-up of what will constitute the Total Army Force to include new educational criteria for what could be a smaller force than was needed for present day operations. While this may be “peace dividend” speculation, there is precedence for the Army to reevaluate its force structure and personal qualification requirements after every major conflict over the last century. . Even though defense budget reductions should redoubt army equipment priorities, training deferrals because of persistent contingency operations have inhibited enlisted professional development despite that counterinsurgency operations require refocused soldiers training to improve their sense of situational understanding and application of observable operational ethics through conceptual enlisted leadership evaluation efforts.

In all its years of fighting the US military has never looked so lean. The fat boy of the world’s militaries is being forced, by congress, on a diet plane not even Jenny Craig would suggest. Congress has told the US military simply, with looming budget cuts, to Charmin up because less simply has to do more. The US military is experiencing an unprecedented troop reduction due to lack of funding. Consequently, as newton stated so accurately so many years ago, “for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”. As our military shrinks and generals are being told to do more with less, many are reacting by turning to advanced weapon technology to fill the void where boots once stood.

The Army has transformed several times during its history. Adapting to the operational environment is a necessity for the force called upon to prosecute its adversaries. The Army must do what is necessary to protect the U.S. against all enemies, and advance the national interests of the American people. To accomplish this, anticipation of threats is crucial and victory against its adversaries is an imperative. The nation relies on the military for strategic level deterrence and expects that it will be decisive in combat operations. For the military to be successful, it is important that transformation adapt to meet these expectations by conforming to the requirements of a successful force of the future in order meet any new threats in any environment around the world.
The ability to understand a problem, determine the desired end state, and develop a strategy to achieve that end state is a highly sought after skill in every facet of the military profession. However, in a joint setting, the problems are generally much more complex requiring an advanced mastery of problem solving from joint staff officers. The complexities of planning on the joint staff level stem from the amount of education it takes to simply understand the problem. Joint staff officers not only must understand the components and capabilities of their own service, they must also understand any service they might interact with to include the nine combatant commands. Firstly, David believed that he needed to get his butt kicked and do things he didn’t want to do. David wanted to do this because he was proving to himself and others that he was not that same little boy anymore. For example, Picasso Basquiat, YouTube contributor, discovered in David’s interview that one day when David came home from work that he saw Navy Seals on the TV. This inspired him to join the Navy. Therefore, even though David hated running, jumping out of air planes and shooting guns he still joined to better himself. Secondly, David was always brutally honest with himself. For instance, Basquiat explained that David had struggled with obesity and many times he weighted over three hundred pounds, but before David joined the Navy he lost over 100 pounds in two months. Thus, David told himself he was fat and decided he was going to change that. Thirdly, David never forgot all his struggles or let them hold him back. For example, Basquiat found out that David created what he called a cookie jar in his mind. This cookie jar consists of all David’s struggles and achievements. The theological themes that stood out in this narrative are God’s willingness to forgive after David’s repentance, and his need for punishment. If David had not repented, God would have no reason to forgive him, but he did repent, and God forgave him. If God had not forgiven David for his wrongdoings, David would have strayed from him. At the same time, if God had not punished David, David would have taken everything into his own hands and taken God for granted. The cycle of punishment, repentance and forgiveness is something seen very often in this section of the Bible, as well as in other parts. Without that cycle, God would not be same God we know today.
The way we have been raised and the relationships we build towards our parents and other individuals have a huge impact on our entire life. Small situations that accour in or during our childhood, can have vital effects and consequences the rest of our life's. Neglection and age differents can be one of many reasons due to an unstable development. David was confronted with some of these things along with topics as death, already at an early age. This caused a deep depression and superficial relationship with his parents and others. Life is something extremely valuable and it is extremely important how we influence and effect others. We are all on the “same” journey.
