Courage is a word that can have numerous meanings depending on the situation and who or what is being spoken of. The true definition for the word “courage” from Webster Dictionary, states that courage is the ability to do something that you know is difficult or dangerous. Shown in the novels, Animal Farm and Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland stories, courage is used by various characters throughout each book. Courage is not used briefly when describing characters in Animal Farm and Alice in Wonderland, but instead is used to show the strength and ability to do what is right and what is needed to be done. In the novel, Animal Farm by George Orwell, a character portrayed as a pig, Napoleon, used courage in a way that did not benefit the surrounding animals. Was Napoleon a courageous character? Yes. But did he do it in everyone's best interest? Absolutely not. The reasoning behind Napoleon's courage is shown throughout the novel when he never gave up for what he believed in, Napoleon was a character who believed “whatever I say goes”. Napoleon had brainwashed the fellow animals on the farm into believing he was the only leader who could make this place better, therefore all of the animals began bowing down to him (Orwell,48). This is shown when the sheep and other animals begin chanting. “Comrade Napoleon, Comrade Napoleon”. Little did all of these animals know, Napoleon did not want what was best for them, he did not want an animal farm, but instead he was working all of them to death and soon turning animal farm into a two legged farm ran by humans and pigs on their hind legs.
