Courage is what motivates us to do something that frightens us. It is crucial to have if you want to experience a well-lived life in which you can have a job, friends, experience, etc. Without it, your life would be a horror. You wouldn't go out, watch eerie movies, and you would never be ecstatic and feel insecure all of the time. This topic unquestionably relates to the novel The Outsiders because in a way, all characters showed signs of courage, even if it was barely noticeable. Even Johnny, who was a coward, was courageous in some ways. An example would be when Johnny, Dally and Ponyboy went into the burning church to rescue the children and salvage whatever else they could. For example, Mulan was an average girl who was underestimated by men’s stereotypical thoughts. They thought she wasn’t exceptional for anything and thought of her as a wimp. To prove them inaccurate, she gathered enough courage to conclude to suddenly leave one day and fight the vicious Huns, or the group of people trying to control China. She was then considered a true warrior and a hero for showing courage. Furthermore, I found a second example which also shared the same theme. In the Ted Talks video, “How We Cut Youth Violence in Boston by 79 Percent” by Jeffrey Brown, Jeffrey talks about how there was teen violence everywhere he went when he was growing up. So, he came up with a plan that would help reduce at least 70% of Boston’s child violence rate. He was too unprepared to do it, but after a bit, he showed signs of courage and even teamed up with the teens to help diminish the violence. Using the example from The Outsiders, you can make connections to the theme and to the third party examples. Johnny was a lot like Mulan; he was underestimated by the Socs and was thought to be very useless and a coward. But, in the end, he managed to fight to save Ponyboy’s life when being attacked by Bob.
