Purpose: Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) works with students at the University of Arkansas to help them solve problems that arise during any given semester. CAPS help students to understand themselves and to promote personal growth. The staff at CAPS helps students to develop more satisfying relationships with their friends, families, and peers. They also assist with other mental health issues. Population: CAPS provide services for all the students attending the University of Arkansas. The requirement for service is first is that the client is a student and is attending the University of Arkansas the semester that the services are sought out. The second requirement that each student pays for the health fee, which this semester is eighty five dollars, and make sure it is paid each semester. However there is an exception the clinic will see anyone if there is a crisis or emergency that includes harm (suicidal Ideation event) to self or someone else (homicidal ideation event). Funding: The Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) Program gets there funding only from the health fee of eighty five dollars that each student attending the University of Arkansas pays each semester. This is due to the way the organization is classified under the Pat Walker Health Center. The University of Arkansas Board Committee has okay expansion of the CAPS program and a increase in staff, but the CAPS program are in charge of finding financial funding to expand and increase the services provided in the future. The CAPS program day to day budget is very tight and they are only able to offer so many services and so much time per day. Functioning/Services: The Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) Program functions to... ... middle of paper ... ...a the first consult and the first three without fee then charge a fee which would substantially lower rate for student then the other community services of Fayetteville and the surrounding area, such as 5-20 dollars a session compared to the community average fee per session is anywhere from 50-250 dollars a session. Apply this same system to the group therapy sessions and this could create considerable revenue for the CAPS program. These funds could help to expand services that are available and increase time framework as well as the amount of students seen by a considerable amount. Once CAPS gets growth increasing they can created other services with low fees to compound this, which will allow to lower overall fees to around 5-10 dollars per session after starting out a little higher like 15-20 dollars session. Group counseling is a viable new option emerging in the school setting. It can be effective and cost-effective for the schooling system by addressing a larger number of students and can be used to address a multitude of topics that children often face. One benefit of group counseling in the school setting is that it teaches children important socializing skills with their peers, as students often learn best from each other (Pérusse, 2009). It provides support, assists with emotional and problem-solving skills, and empowers children to be help each other as well as receive help from their peers (Thompson, 2012). The group setting may be perceived as less threatening, it helps bridge the gap in trust for children by providing a safe environment in which children can connect with others, and it allows for interactions that builds on social skills and the development of empathy for others (Thompson, 2012).

Lastly, I will provide a brief example of how we would work as a team so that the end result will benefit each member of the family.
Funding for mental health care comes from various sources. States typically derive the larger amount of their funds from Medicaid and state general funds that are administered by state mental health authorities. In 2007, 46% of funding was through Medicaid, and 40% of funding was through state general funds (Honberg et al. 2). Overall, states consistently assemble their budget from state general funds, federal Medicaid, federal block grants, and private grants (Honberg et al. 3).
Chemical dependency counseling involves direct interactions with the clients and as such standards need to be set which will promote safe and accountable counseling. Chemical dependency counseling has a set code of ethics, guidelines and regulations that seek to safeguard the interests of everybody involved. Laws and ethics ensure that everyone acts in a way that does not cause harm to others. Laws and ethics also help to give the profession its credibility. The Licensed Professional Counselors Association of Georgia (2014) gives provisions on the conduct of counselors as stipulated by the law. Chapter 135-7-01 provides the various responsibilities of counselors to their clients. Every counselor has a responsibility to their clients. It is their primary duty to promote the welfare of their clients and meet the client’s best interests.
283). Therefore; any counseling program wanting to make a real change should be held to the highest standards and be evaluated for current and future progress (Houser, 2015). As applied to this paper the population and the goals of the group counseling program should be clearly laid out. The definition of progress should be defined and if a specific timeline for progress is desired it should be made clear. Ultimately; conducting a program evaluation of the proposed program in this paper will demonstrate if the existence of such a program is working and if so then the evaluation can serve as a platform to ensure its
While the Maple Counseling Center intake form appears quite lengthy, the majority of the questions can be answered by placing a check mark in the appropriate box. This enables the client to reflect on his/her behavior without requiring a detailed response for each question. From there, the practitioner will be able to ask appropriate questions and follow up on areas of concern during the intake meeting. The intake form provides the professional with enough information in order to ask appropriate questions to get to the heart of the client’s problem; furthermore, it enables the professional to identify if the client has any suicidal or self-harm thoughts that need to be addressed immediately.
The Maple Counseling Center has a very thorough intake form; however, it lacks in some areas. The intake form thoroughly addresses how the individual is feeling in terms of depression and anxiety; however, it fails to thoroughly address how the individual feels in social situations. While the intake form does have one question about relationships with family members and one question about relationships with individuals outside of one’s family, it would be more effective to have several more specific questions about one’s socialization. This would enable the professional to have a more well-rounded understanding of the client from the start of the relationship at the intake meeting.
The act gave health insurance to anyone who needed it. Those who can afford private insurance have affordable out of pocket charges. The co-pays for mental health are then the same as physical health under the parity law. The act was aimed to benefit those who can’t afford health insurance. Even with the aim being at those who needed it the most, it is still sometimes unrealistic in what the person can pay out of pocket for the co-pays. For the people who cannot afford an insurance plan that offers them decent co-pays the process of paying for the therapy sessions that are sometimes as frequent as three-times a week to only once a month, can be hefty. This added to the medication that will be needed can drive a person to be broke. Mental health medication is among one of the highest costing medications (Cohn. J.) With majority of those living in poverty, or working class in a job that does not offer them insurance or an insurance plan they cannot afford, their only option is choose such a plan that has steep out of pocket
As a Certified Crisis Counselor, I found this text one of the most interesting books I’ve read on the subject matter. Babler’s perspective while not unique is somewhat unorthodox to say the least within the world of crisis counseling. But compared to the previous text I must say I do prefer this one. But that I do understand is purely subjective and because I also happen to love autobiographies I am partial to Chapters 1 and 2 (also subjective) of this text.
Sometimes individuals consider becoming counselors after overcoming some major life challenge such as addiction or a history of bad relationships. Perhaps an individual has encountered a particularly effective counselor or therapist and has a desire to follow in those footsteps. Others may have had a bad experience with counseling and concluded that it can be done better. People do not think of this work so much as a job, or even as a career. More typically, a constellation of life experiences that demand explanation and a sense that others seek one out for assistance and emotional sustenance become driving forces leading one toward the counseling profession” (An invitation to). .
Theoretical Perspective: This semester in procedures of counseling class we discussed a lot of different types of counseling theories. We also did a lot of practicing with each theory with our partners. I found that person-centered therapy best fits my personal attitudes and style of counseling. I think this would be a good style of counseling for me because I can see myself better helping people as a whole than trying to fix an actual problem.
To begin to understand we must explore the differences between group counseling and individual counseling. By better understanding its structure a clearer picture is shown on the necessities of ethics within its environment.
Counseling is considered therapy for individuals or groups of people who are experiencing personal issues or problems that are affecting their well-being. The many roles of counseling include individual counseling, couples counseling, group counseling, and coaching. The settings include private practice counseling, mental health centers, crisis center counseling, and university counseling centers who all offer many counseling services. Counseling is one of the many helping professions similar to psychologist, psychiatrist, social workers, and family therapist which all involving overseeing the well-being of individuals and groups of people. Counselors work closely with schools, health care facilities, and private agencies to provide counseling services to those individuals. Counseling is not only for people who have been diagnosed with mental disabilities and illnesses but for anyone who is currently or has experienced a traumatic experience in their lifetime. It is a therapy that everyone should take advantage of to ensure their mental
A study performed in 1992, reported approximately 3,400,000 youth had failed to complete high school and were not enrolled in high school (Starr 1998). This statistic is based on the United States where job competition has greatly increased due to technology. Many of these student lacked the support and training necessary to succeed in today’s society. Currently in every high school across the nation, there is a person responsible for offering support and training to the youth of America. Available for all students is a guidance counselor. Counselors within the high school setting play an influential role in the forming of post high school goals through the planning of numerous activities.
Guidance counseling, also called school counseling, has evolved over the years into an important part of the education system. Counselors are now taking on new roles in schools as leaders so much so that the ways in which counseling is being implemented has become a much talked about topic in schools. The effectiveness of counseling in schools is looked at by the education system more frequently than it was in the past. Though all school counselors must follow a national model for counseling, the roles and functions of counselors at various levels in the school system are different, however, school counselors at all levels of education before college are generally effective despite implications.
