Counseling Associates First meeting: It was pretty basic. I went in unsure if I actually wanted to go into the career path. I had a pretty set idea (well as much as a teenager can) of what I want to do in the future. Alla was very excited about doing the job shadow and I was hesitant but her enthusiasm soothed my worry. I was concerned about what to wear not because of girlness but because I didn’t want to be too serious looking yet I didn’t want to seem like I was taking what she was doing for granted. Second meeting: We talked about what a person has to do to become a therapist. We also talk about the difference between therapist and psychologist. I found that very interesting because I often use them interchangeably and I still do at times …show more content…
A new person fresh out of college has to have a certain amount of hours in sessions with patients (with a supervisor) in order to begin to qualify. We talk about different things that she’s qualified as which is: substance abuse counselor, gender identity counselor, and a general counselor. I found it very interesting that she was a gender identity counselor in Madison, SD and she agree. We began talking about how Madison has an lgbtq+ community that is very small and more suppressed. In a big city there would be more openly lgbtq+ type people and a person who is also lgbtq+ would see them and feel less alone, but in a small town like Madison it’s more isolating. I found it very insightful as a heterosexual, straight, female I have never felt isolated like that in town or through media. I’m exposed to lgbtq+ type of things every day, but that’s not always the case for other …show more content…
At the very beginning I signed a confidentiality paper basically saying that if I see someone while I job shadow I’m not allowed to talk about it. I asked her why the group is name Counseling Associates if there needs to be an air of confidentiality. Having the word counseling in the name makes it kind of transparent about what is going on there. If I were to work at Lewis and saw a person walking into a place called Counseling Associates it would be obvious why they were going in there. She admitted that she never really thought about it that way and we discussed it. We came to a conclusion that there is a certain amount of stigma that comes with seeing a therapist and that the name might help because it’s not making the client feel like they have to hide it or feel ashamed. Fifth meeting: When a person is in college they are taught to pick a theory that they are to use with every client. She talked about how this isn’t always the case and that when you get certain clients you have to change how the session goes based on how they act and why they are there. We went through the DMS-5 and talked through different theories and approaches. It was pretty interesting, I’m a sucker for anything with
In this vignette, the client and social worker begin a new session at the point where the last left off. Kirsten, a college student, has come to this private practice setting to discuss her experiences, fears, and difficulties with coming out, particularly after her previous coming out experiences. In the previous sessions, the worker and Kirsten have explored many themes revolving around coming out, her experience coming out to her neighbor, and Kirsten’s anxieties about talking with her sister. The role of the social worker in this vignette is to discuss possible options with Kirsten as she moves toward talking with her sister, engaging in role play Kirsten has requested, and exploring Kirsten’s feelings about the upcoming meeting with her
Unlike my first interview, we were able to schedule a ‘face-to-face’ meeting to provide answers to my questions. After we met, he led me to
The format of the meeting was extremely organized and much more formal than I anticipated. The meeting opened up with the “we” version of the serenity prayer. Following this
Professional identity is the result of a developmental process that facilitates individuals to reach an understanding of their profession in conjunction with their own self-concept, enabling them to articulate their role, philosophy, and approach to others within and outside of their chosen. As counselors engage in this individually unique growth process, it is hoped that the counseling profession as a whole will be strengthened as its practitioners and educators reach a heightened sense of purpose and a synergistic collective identity, an identity which is still developing within the profession. The term collective identity refers to having shared goals, resources, and aspirations for the profession. In order for individuals to build a personal relationship with their chosen occupation, it is important for a clear foundation to be established. To build this foundation, a professional philosophy must be constructed which clarifies and distinguishes one’s profession from other similar vocations; in this instance, other mental health fields. In counseling, this foundation is thought to be created by establishing clear professional expectations through licensure, streamlined educational programming, professional organizations, and ethical standards that build on an underlying professional philosophy. This article will review current literature and research on professional identity in the counseling field. This review will then be presented in relation to the external evaluation of success within counseling and counselor education and how this evaluation is influenced and internally understood through one’s gender role beliefs and associated societal expectations.
During this third session I felt that it helped that it was a continuation of the treatment and I knew the client already. I was able to no interrupt while she was talking, Like I did the first session. . I was able to keep eye contact, My facial expression I was described that I was hard to read, but she was able to feel comfortable. and she felt that I was present in the moment. I did asked open ended questions and I think that is part of my personality. I feel like in order to get to know a person so many questions need to be asked which is not the Person Center modal. I was able to also paraphrase and not give my opinion about th...
She felt that I maintained eye contact and reiterated her responses in a way to made her feel heard. The open-ended questions that I had integrated into the interview allowed her to realize the inconsistencies between her current behavior and her future goals. I big point from her was that I allowed her to do majority of the talking which she believed put her in control and that I wasn’t forcing her into a particular direction of change. She could tell that I wasn’t completely confident in the way that I asked my questions, using a lot of “um’s” and “so’s “. We also discussed how she felt about the amount of pauses I took in order to respond and how this made for a awkward silence, taking away the comfort of the setting. It was also brought up that I could have used more empathy when responding to her as it would of let her knew that I am taking into account the difficulty of the change for
Sometimes individuals consider becoming counselors after overcoming some major life challenge such as addiction or a history of bad relationships. Perhaps an individual has encountered a particularly effective counselor or therapist and has a desire to follow in those footsteps. Others may have had a bad experience with counseling and concluded that it can be done better. People do not think of this work so much as a job, or even as a career. More typically, a constellation of life experiences that demand explanation and a sense that others seek one out for assistance and emotional sustenance become driving forces leading one toward the counseling profession” (An invitation to). .
A Certified nursing assistant is one of the members of the health care team. It is also known as a CNA or Nursing Aide. They refer to the ones they care for as residents or patients. In the medical field, a CNA is the lowest paid, however they are the ones who do all of the work such as physical work. They come in contact with the residents more than anyone else; they are the prime care givers. They are always under the supervision of licensed practical, licensed vocational and registered nurses, known as LPN/LVN or RN. The residents/patients that they deal with need long term care, like nursing homes and caring for them at their home. Since they are long term, staying with a faculty up to several months and even years, many CNA’s create a bond and close relationship with them. The main thing they do for them is produce basic care for them or known to them as activates of daily living or ADL. Great paying CNA jobs are very easy to find, even though it requires little training and a variety of skills.
They ranged from the length of the meeting to specific problems faced by some of the members. He told me not to be surprised if there were some members who were admitted to be alcoholics and narcotic addicts. As I questioned him further, he said that many of the people in that predicament were also former criminals. One person in particular was so involved with both drugs and alcohol that he nearly died in the emergency room from an alcohol overdose. Now that my questions were answered, I felt much more at ease and ready to go to the meeting.
A career that I have been interested for a very long time is in Psychology, which is to be a Counseling Psychologist. To be a Counseling Psychologist research is needed to receive a clear understanding of this specific career. For example, it is valuable to know what are the job requirements/duties, being paid hourly or salary, and if it is required to relocate. However, it is very important for me to know does it fit my personality, the exact year of graduation, what schools will I attend, how long it would take to complete my education and how much will my education cost. These are all-important material to be familiar with and are a journey that I am ready to take and experience.
A counselor is defined as a person trained to give guidance on personal, social, or psychological problems. Professional counselors help to identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional or social interruptions. Counseling also improves communication, strengthens self-esteem, and promotes behavior change in relations to mental health. Counseling enables us to appreciate how we are in healthy relationships and safe environments due to some of the bad things others experience. Counseling helps clients understand and clarify their views on life and learn to reach their goals through making wise choices. In most counseling situations, the client is experiencing personal issues such as low self-esteem,
After coming to North Carolina Central University I have distinct opinion of what the social work profession is. Before, when I was still in high school I had a poor general idea of social workers. I was aware that school social workers had a degree but, I was under the impression that such degree was not needed to work in a place like the department of social services and both positions carried the same title. I knew of someone who worked at DSS for many years and they had begun working there straight out of high school. I know now that I was wrong, however, was my predetermine opinion that much different than the public’s? The only reason I have a more precise knowledge of the field is because I am a social work major. However, the vast majority of the population are not social work majors and thus their impression is based on what they have experienced and seen. In this paper I argue the different publics views based on interviews, readings, and personal experience.
The LGBT community has been silence for so many years in which society has looked at this population with a very negative view. Thankfully we are accepting this community with open arms but, it is still considered taboo too many others. Understanding the LGBT community can be a positive outcome to the members because we all need to get along and learn to accept one another. The individual that I will be interviewing is a women that is 42 years old and was married to a man for 15 years she has two children with her ex-husband. I will be asking her a couple of questions regarding her sexuality and her transition to lesbianism.

One of the things I enjoyed the most about the whole meeting was the Table Topics. We played a game that was very interesting. We had three dice. We would roll them and see what number you get on each on. So then you would use the number you got on first dice you rolled. We had a paper with different topics for example; if you got a 1 then your topic would be if I could go back on time. Then you would use the number you got on the second dice and go to the paper. Say you got a 5 and on the paper it said I would never do that again. Then you would use your third dice and as you got a 2. You would look on the paper and it may have because hair was to long. So the...
