Purpose: Marilyn Manson’s purpose for writing the article was to defend himself from charges regarding the Columbine shooting and to criticize the people who not only accused him, but others against violence. In the midst of his cynical comments and criticisms, Manson delivers the message of violence being more publicized paves the way for more problems in the future. Manson criticizes the media’s actions and comments about how bullied children could turn these two criminals into their new idols. In the article, after he addressed that blaming his music was no excuse, Manson begins asking questions like “what did Timothy McVeigh like to watch?” or “what inspires Bill Clinton to blow up people in Kosovo?” (Manson 420). These were all cases of murder that were reported by the media, but Manson questions why the media did not look for inspiration for these murders in contrast to the Columbine shooting. He recognizes that the media is using him as a scapegoat for their own benefit instead of reporting the real information at the time. Violent Media is Good for Kids, by Gerard Jones, is an article which makes many claims to support the argument in which a controlled amount of violence could be beneficial for a young, developing child. Even though the topic of this article can be controversial, the claims serve to support the argument in many noteworthy ways. It is written in such a way that it tells a story, starting when the author was a child and works its way to his adulthood. In this case the author uses, what I believe to be just the correct amount of each rhetorical strategy, and fulfills his goal for writing the article. This argument is interesting and at the same time, effective. Throughout the analyzing process logos, ethos, and pathos are searched for and scrutinized.
April 20th, 1999, Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, experienced a mass shooting. Thirteen people were injured and more than twenty were injured. Twelve were students and one was a teacher. Two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold opened fire on their high school for forty one minutes before turning their guns on themselves and committing suicide. School shootings are notorious for making headline news but in 1999, school shooting were not as prevalent as they are in the present day. The media blew up on the catastrophe that was Columbine and many questions were raised, who were these kids and why did they do this? Speculation arose about why they did it. Unlike most of the country, I knew about Columbine High School on April 19, 1999. I knew that the Columbine Rebels had a good football team, I remembered how they beat Cherry Creek for the 1999 football championship. I knew what Columbine's building was like from when I was inside it in January for a debate tournament. I had friends that went to CHS. We had gone on a trip to Hawaii together to learn about biology. The rest of the country found out about Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. They didn't hear about their football team, the debate tournament they hosted, or my friends, though; they heard about two angry students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, that went on a killing rampage killing 12 other students, a teacher, and themselves. The nation, the media, the killers, my friends, and me all have their own view of what happened that day. Many people tried to understand how something so terrible could happen, while the killers thought that the killings were a wonderful thing, and still other students were trying to comprehend that this tragedy had actually happened so close to home.
The columbine massacre the day where no one is safe in school or out of school. The columbine massacre is about two students named Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris both seniors 17 years old both two weeks before graduating they killed 12 students, one teacher, and 21 injured to their shooting on April 20, 1999. Both Dylan and Eric were some believe they were bullied by the sport teams in their school so they planned to kill the people who bullied them and other mostly anyone who gets in their way but that wasn’t really why the FBI he said that there target was everyone no one in pacify we will not get in to more details now. Dylan and Eric were both intelligent boys with solid parents and a good home and both had brothers younger than them. They played soccer, baseball, and both enjoyed to work on computers. Both boys were thinking on commit suicide on 1997 but instead started to plan a massacre in 1998 a year before it happened. Then the two boys had got into some trouble for breaking into a van on January 30, 1998 trying to steal some fuses and wires for bombs for them to make, but they got caught in trouble. So the court put them in a program called the juvenile diversion program, but even if they were there they were still planning the massacre and the court also put Eric in some angry management classes and people believe it worked but it didn’t he just did it to look like it work and both boys made it look like they were really sorry but they weren’t. Dylan and Eric both really hated everyone in their school and the court as well after they got caught breaking in to that van that’s when they really started to plan the massacre more and that’s when Harris started he’s journals no one really knows way but they didn’t hate a hand...
Charles Manson’s illicit upbringing contributed to the manipulative criminal he grew up to be. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1934 to an unmarried 16-year-old mother, and to a father he never met. When he was only 5-years-old, his mother was sentenced to prison for armed robbery. After moving from household to household in foster care, then later being expelled from boarding school, Manson commit his first crime in 1948 when he was caught and convicted for robbing a grocery store. He spent the rest of his adolescence and early adulthood in and out of jail for car theft, forging checks, and running a prostitution ring. In between sentences he married and divorced two women, and had two children. In prison, where he did most of his growing up, he learned to play the guitar, and became obsessed with the Beatles. Manson was released in the spring of 1967, despite asking to stay (Bugliosi 14-38). Manson never felt like he belonged to normal society, as he spent so much of his time in prison. “I never realized that the people outside [of prison] are much different from the people inside. People inside if you lie, you get punched… There’s a certain amount of truth in prison. And being raised in prison, I was pretty much raised in light of that truth” (Journey). ...
Crime manifests itself in various ways in society and oftentimes difficult to pinpoint what drives people to commit certain actions. The Columbine shooting was a particular incident that ended in tears and suffering which resulted in numerous research as to what was going through the minds of these young individuals at the time of the shooting. Therefore, this paper will analyze specifically the role of differential association- reinforcement as altered by Akers in propelling Dylan Klebold to commit such heinous act, while also giving credit to Edwin Sutherland for first formulating the framework of differential association.

Because of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold’s fanaticism with artists such as Marilyn Manson, music was labeled as the culprit for negatively influencing the youth of America. Music is a tool of expression that an artist uses to vent their frustrations and to reveal their emotions. However, these artists do not see the moral boundary that they have crossed with their emotionally disturbing lyrics and dark melodies. To grab the attention of teenagers, musicians often produce music videos with a vivid portrayal of the song’s message. The heavy influence it has on kids today is in direct relation to the murders and shootings that are happening. The use of CD walkmans and the carelessness of parents are making it easier for children to get their hands on the “satanic music.” The anger expressed by these musicians shows the youth that violence is culturally acceptable. Due to the strong emotion that is portrayed in music, the youth responds to music more so than they do to video games, movies and TV. There are many components in music structure that influence violent behavior such as music videos, lyrics, style, and role model images.

People have to suffer many difference social pressures so they need a way to relax the pressures. Watching violent films, images and playing violent games is a quick and easy way to relax their pressures; for this reason, there are more and more people like to see violent things from media, and as long as there is a demand for this violent information, the financial incentive for media companies will be there. In general, media violence can affects people in three different ways. The first one is leading people to solve their problem through violent means. People always can see many incidents of violence happening in media, and media always embellish the violent means to be a cool way to solve a problem. Another theory that could relate to the columbine shooting is the age graded theory by Sampson and Laub where the delinquent behavior is a result of a life event. Harris dad being an air force officer moved to different places so much that Harris never had a chance to stay in place and make friends. Moving to so many places could be a life changing event that could impact on his social life And Klebold being a quite and shy person and his depression towards not being able to blend in any clique made him vulnerable to bullying, which could be considered a life changing event.

Columbine High School was in the forefront of this tragedy. Two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, opened fire on their fellow classmates and teacher. These two students cut the lives short of thirteen students and one teacher. They then turned their guns onto themselves leaving the nation with no answers as to why? They did leave videotape. This videotape contained Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold planning their attack on Columbine High School. This piece of evidence showed two students that were not part of the "in crowd". They were outsiders, losers, as some would consider them. They were taunted, humiliated, and disrespected by their classmates. But how can two intelligent students do something as deadly as they did. Was it because they had bad parents? Not at all, they even went out of their way to save their parents the blame by repeatedly saying that it was not their fault that they were about to do what they did. So what was the cause of all this tragedy and how can it be stopped so it can never happen again in our middle schools and high schools? Elliot Aronson a social psychologist wrote a book called Nobody Left to Hate, Teaching Compassion After Columbine. This book represents his ideas on how to use certain strategies to have a better school environment that teaches compassion, tolerance while putting education in a winning situation.

A motive to commit this crime was for personal cause homicide, this was a need for revenge. Originally the house targeted on Cielo drive was targeted to represent the destruction of the glorious fame and fortune. The past people who lived in that house all had celebrity statues. Manson felt like that was taken from him when Beach Boy, Dennis Wilson stole his song and producer Terry Melcher took back his record contract with Manson. Melcher himself didn’t live in the house on Cielo Drive anymore but anyone who did Charles Manson wanted dead. There was a period of time before Manson got to the point of constructing a murder. He idolized fame and he turned resentful when he never had it. Before being denied a record contract and turning resentful toward famous people, Manson was inspired by and idolized the Beatles. Although it wasn’t a positive influence their songs inspired him, “Helter Skelter” became a motto to Manson. Two of the Beatles other songs, Blackbird and Piggy’s inspired him as well.
