The solution that I am proposing is a long term strategy of creating awareness in the school systems. Making the next generation informed about the side effect of their social Medias. I suggested a possible way of doing that, which is by starting from the university of Chicago community and expanding out ward to the school systems. And I pointed out that this awareness creating process must convert in the end to be a curriculum in the school system. Schools and colleges can prepare an awareness course that is given in the elementary schools, high schools and even in colleges. In the world today, we as a society have contoured our lifestyle in order to grow more accepting of socialized platforms. With the simple help of different networking tools and various applications, people have been able to develop an online persona. The way one presents themselves through social media may differ from how they are portrayed in a public setting. Internet sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have acted as a tool for self-expression and individuality. Although social media has proven to be very effective, it has also condoned a more detached and artificial lifestyle for some. Through the use of social media, people have grown more insecure, distracted, and have worsened their social anxiety.
Let's talk about social media. As you may know, a debate has arisen concerning the fact of whether or not this device really deserves the time and attention that we give it. This is becoming more and more an issue, as people (especially teens) are experiencing cyberbullying and even depression. I think that social media should be more controlled much more in our lives, and we shouldn’t be spending more time in a screen than with another person.
The use of social networking sites is rising at great rates. According to a report conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project in 2012, ninety-five percent of individuals aged 12-17 use the internet; and eighty-one percent of those use social network sites (Pew Interest). Although it is known that social media can have a useful impact on lives, often times people forget that with a positive comes a negative. The continual use of social network sites will impact teen lives more negatively than positively because they can cause huge distractions from valuable and critical pursuits like education; they can also cause mental health issues and a reduction in communication skills.
Purpose of Study Individuals should understand that the use or nonuse of social media has negative and positive effects on their lives, whether they recognize them or not. Students who excessively use social networking applications can be negatively affected because they are spending too much time on these applications rather than paying attention in class, completing homework, studying, sleeping, or focusing on their own health and condition. However, these same students who are excessive users are often times the students who are more aware of global issues and updates in pop culture through the use of social media. Students who moderately use social networking applications spend a good amount of time on these applications and are still able to manage time for sleeping, practicing good eating habits, homework, and studying. These students are usually just as aware, or slightly less aware, than students who excessively use social networking.
Social media can have detrimental effects on the formation of an adolescent’s identity, such as social isolation, meaning that the individual will spend excessive amounts of time attached to any electronics that will provide him with social media access. Social networking has been debated to have beneficial or detrimental effects, as overuse and abuse of the Internet can be harmful to someone, such as an adolescent. According to the National Crime Prevention Council, over one million teenage girls are victimized psychologically as well as physically, through social media. Discrimination through media causes teenagers to isolate themselves from the world, as well as implement online socialization and not having the capacity to communicate with another human being in person. Furthermore, this is the effect of media abuse.
Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are only a few of the most common words used in today’s language among children, teens and adults. Such words can be described as popular terms related to what many of us know as social media. In today’s culture, many teenagers rely so heavily on the usage of social media that issues once thought to be revolutionary are now taking place offline and online. In fact, several cases of mental addictions, depression and even suicide have all stemmed from the initial usage of sites such as Facebook, which are otherwise socially accepted as a simple means of communicating with “friends.” While social media does have its advantages, it can also be held responsible for several negative events in the lives of today’s teenagers.
We live in a world that has become addicted and dedicated toward social media and it is driving America’s youth into the ground. Teenagers and adults are so wrapped up in social media that is runs their lives every day. Constantly people are checking their phones for the latest on social networks. They have to see pictures, tweets, statuses, comments, likes, and the list goes on and on. Social media is becoming the focus point in the modern American society that it is beginning to control people’s social skills, communication skills, and their livelihood.
Social media and the internet has become apart of the culture of this generation. Many people turn to social media for various reasons such as news, networking, games, and other time wasting activities. The rapid growth of technology in our society has become more dominant than it was in the 17th and 18th century. Today, technology is used for almost everything in our day to day lives. But the most common usage of technology is for communication and industrialization. However, every good thing has its disadvantage if it is over used, and since technology has become very dominant, it is used by both young and older people but more predominant among the youth of the today. Even more, technology has brought about social networking such as Facebook, Twitter, my space, piazza.com, instagram, tango, and last but not the least texting. According to socialnetworking.procon.org, “47% of American adults used social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Classmates.com in 2011, up from 26% in 2008. [26] on social media sites like these, users may develop biographical profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research, and share thoughts, photos, music, links, and more” (procon.org. 1). Although these sites help many Americans to connect with their family and friends, have we really thought about how these sites are discouraging some students to spend less time with their books, how young adults are losing their marriages, the indecent behavior it is promoting, and how it has escalated texting and driving in our society? Obviously not!

Through these new advances in technology one can share things about themselves to the world to view, and prior to social media one would have to communicate and share physically. These social media site offer adolescence new ways to access communication and entertainment and the long-term effects are still unknown. For this reason, it is imperative for parents to be more aware of this new media and what it offers both good and bad for our children.
Before technology, face to face communication was a normal everyday thing and loneliness was a problem that was rarely talked about or experienced. People went about their day without checking their phone every five minutes or so to see if anyone liked the status they posted or feeling lonely when nobody new liked it. In new studies more and more people have feelings of loneliness and depression. However, more people now use social medias such as Facebook, twitter and instagram. Social media has created a social problem in society and it is distorting how people are communicating with each other face to face. Social media in today’s day is seen as a worldwide antisocial epidemic amongst the younger generation and a few older adults born in the millennial. Social media is notably used more by the younger people in our society and around the world, considering that technology is more accessible and easier to use for them.
