The Copyright Term Extension Act
The first federal copyright act was The Copyright Act of 1790. Due to The Copyright Act of 1790 mainly focusing on chart, map and book authors protection; it has needed to be altered and added to over time to produce more adequate copyright protections for the many people creating creative works. There have been several expansions to The Copyright Act of 1790 and one of those expansions is The Copyright Term Extension Act that was passed in 1998. This act is also known as the “Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act” as well as the “Mickey Mouse Protection Act”.

This caused a lot of controversy in the public domain, because the Copyright Term Extension Act not only added twenty more years to copyright duration, but it also restored the copyrights of many creative works that have already fallen in the public domain. This effected the public due to creative works being taken back from the public and unavailable for another twenty years. It was a great day for the corporations and independents that owned these remunerative copyrights because they now get to, again have control over republishing and collect the profits from the republishing. Though, it was a positive thing that happened for the corporations and independents; it was a sad day for other talented artists that wanted to create other great talented pieces based off of copyrighted creative works. Most of the people that wanted to reinvent or reuse the hundreds of thousands creative pieces could not afford to pay copyright fees. It is referred to this because the first Mickey Mouse cartoon was going to fall into public domain come the end of 2003 but, this was stopped due to President Clinton signing the Copyright Term Extension Act. This was a huge win for Disney. Disney now received another twenty years of Copyrights to Mickey Mouse, as well as many other creative works. This meant Disney maintained control of who does what with Mickey Mouse as well as continue to collect the profits from this. This was a hard hit for the public who couldn’t wait to create their own creative arts containing not only Mickey Mouse but many other copyrighted pieces of work. The public couldn’t wait, they only had five more years to finally be able to use Mickey but whatever works they had planned were postponed for another twenty years. Mickey Mouse is headed to public domain. Just a small amount of time before Disney loses their copyrights to Mickey Mouse.
