Birth of the Cool, the eleven track Capitol record, released in 1957, was actually recorded earlier in 1949 and 1950. As one of the most influential jazz albums of all time, its title depicts the genesis of cool jazz. In the evolution of jazz this post bebop style of the late 1940s through the 1950s was a departure from the emphasis in bebop on virtuoso players in fast tempos with focus on melodies and syncopated rhythms. Cool jazz aimed to be a more subdued, smooth and subtle form of jazz music with a lighter tone, slower tempos and controlled ensemble playing. Cool jazz re-popularized jazz back into the mainstream American music scene.

In post WWII America, with the growth of affluence, intellectualism and uncertainty about the world, remaining cool and calm was valued. Cool jazz found its niche as a cerebral endeavor, a reaction to the complex, entertainment-based, punchy style of bebop jazz. It created an ambiance and mood of relaxation and reflection.

Of the jazz styles we studied, it’s my favorite because I get a visceral reaction.The first time I heard Miles Davis’,My Ship, I was hiking in the woods with a friend. We were listening to my little bluetooth speaker hanging from my pack as we walked. We stopped walking and sat down and listened. I felt I was suspended or in an augmented reality. That was my first introduction to cool jazz, so I sought out other songs and artists. I listened to _________ and _____________. Cool jazz has a romantic sound that fills the airspace. When I hear it I get the feeling that everything is insulated and chill. The wave of smooth laid back music extends to me and I feel calm and serene. Cool jazz makes me feel like I’m performing.
