Humor is more than just amusing entertainment to pass the time. Though jokes and witty banter can be shallow, humor can go deeper than surface level to convey messages to audiences who would otherwise be close-minded about certain ideas. Humor is a great tool to get audiences to change the way they think, feel, and act. In “Saying Goodbye to Yang,” Alexander Weinstein uses humor to criticize some of society’s faults such as the way it has become heavily reliant on technology, racially insensitive, and judgmental.
Kristen Wiig, Eddie Murphy, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, and Robert Downy Jr. all have one thing in common beside the fact that they are huge super stars. All of them started their careers from Saturday Night Live on NBC. The careers of the actors and comedians from Saturday Night Live usually evolve greatly from the time they start on the show to the time they finish. One specific show of Saturday Night Live shows some of the great actors all together, “Seth Meyers instructed Fred Armisen. Kenan Thomsan ran lines…Rachel Dratch adjusted her Debbie Downer wig; Kristen Wiig...
Psychologists, sociologists and anthropologists study humor because it is a fundamental culture value, but they still can’t determine why certain things make some people laugh and others not. There are “humor quotient” tests that are designed to measure an individual’s sense of humor, but these tests are questionable. These tests aren’t accurate because almost all humor depends on cultural background knowledge and language skills. Not every person in the whole world, or even in one country share the same background knowledge and skills, therefore they cannot have the same type of humor. “The fact remains that individuals vary in their appreciation of humor” (Rappoport 9). Since humor varies from individual to individual, humor lies in the individual. How successful or funny a joke is depends on how the person receives the joke, humor cannot be measured by a statistical
Although modern science has allowed us to develop many complex medicines, laughter is still the strongest one available in the real world and in the book. Laughter proves to be a strong medicine in more ways than one and is completely free, allowing anyone to use it at anytime. It allows us to connect socially with people, it can be used as a way of overthrowing power, and it is good for your health. As Randle McMurphy showed in the novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, laughter can lighten the mood in the darkest situations.
Laughing is resorted to in times where we need to laugh. It’s an escape from reality, its comfort, its fear. Laughing subdues any emotion that is too high strung in our system. It lets it vapor out in a melancholy form that helps us cope with problems that no one else can really understand and help us with. In One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest it allowed emotional tension escape from the patients and made nurse Ratched lose her ward.
Laughter’s beneficial health effects are life saving. “Past president of the Association of Applied and Therapeutic Humor, Steven M. Sultanoff, Ph.D. and clinical psychologist in Irvine, California says, “Humor stimulates
It is said in the "Science of Laughter" if laughing or joking didn't serve a purpose in our lives, it would've died out long ago. So why do we joke? The simple answer is to make people laugh. According to Carr and Greeves, our ability to joke is a human property, finding the amusing concept in a story or riddle is just a habit. Humans know how a joke works, and how to get a funny punchline across. For example, the author argues that any type of story or joke doesn't have to have a threat, but it can be suspenseful until it reaches its conclusion. Carr and Greeves state that "your brain responds to this tiny paradigm shift by making a conceptual leap that mirrors the jump from perceived threat to no threat, with the same results- laughter" (Carr and Greeves 41). When we laugh, it's usually at something funny or something we find amusement in, but laughter is also a habit developed at an early age.
The joy of laughter is all around us/everywhere nowadays. From the front page of reddit.com to the lecture of my college classes. Humor have it’s way into sneaking into our lives no matter where we head. But what is humor, and why do we laugh at the thing we laugh at. According to John Morreal laughter is a cause by the sudden change to happiness or greatness “Laughter result from a pleasant Pscyological shift Morreall (249)”. Morreall states that this theory applies to nearly all laughter. It does not matter what age nor situation somebody is in, this theory applies to it all. For example, he states that a baby laugh at a game of peekaboo because the baby feels the sudden change of somebody disappearing and reappearing. But the baby will only feel this joy of sudden shift by the presence reappearing. The baby will feel despair if the shift have gone another direction and the pleasant presence does not appear. I do agree with Morreall theory of laughter that laughter mostly result from a pleasant physiological shift.
I personally think that joke theft is a real and serious issue. Because a lot of people spend a lot of their time writing these jokes and I totally understand them being mad for getting their jokes stolen from them like that. I would at least want some recognition or something if someone was wanting to use a joke that I made, they could've at least done that.

Laughing doesn’t just make you feel lighter; it actually changes your body physically, as well. Some of the short-term benefits of laughter are that: it “stimulates your heart, lungs, and muscles, and increases the endorphins that are released by your brain”; it “activates and relieves your stress response”, and it “soothes tension” (“Stress Management”). The fact of so many Americans having problems with either their lungs or heart should jump out. If laughter could even remotely help, why are more doctors not employing this technique? The long-term benefits of laughter is that it “improves your immune system”, “relieves pain”, “increases personal satisfaction”, and “improves your mood” (“Stress Management”). If laughter is a “natural painkiller” (“Stress Management”) then why are so many people all over the world in pain? Why are people sick with incurable diseases? Not everyone that laughs are satisfied with their life, and not
Laughing or laughter is not a way to find a solution for a problem but it is a way to deal with a problem, it also performs like a circuit breaker and stop the continues of misguided behaviour patterns. it is also stop people from taking themselves too seriously (Lyttle. 2003, 2)
Laughing is powerful and if someone laughs with people they love, I believe this can solve any hardship they are going through. A laugh can mean a number of different things and can be thought of as a universal language, it can mean joy, happiness, nervousness, or confusion. Everyone can do it, everyone can use it and everyone can understand it, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity or religion. It's something that doesn't separate us from others, instead it brings us together. A laugh is something that can change someone’s entire day around. Whether someone is feeling down or upset about something, we all know that, regardless of what the circumstances are, if we see something that makes us laugh we start to feel better. Aside from making us feel good or better emotionally, laughter has been scientifically proven to help keep us healthy. Laughter has the capability to strengthen the immune system, lower blood sugar, enhance blood flow and circulation, as well as reduce stress, burdens and conflicts. This weird yet wonderful sound is an essential part of life. Laughter brings individuality and fun to an otherwise ordinary
How does laughter change the value of life? Many people today are having issues with their mental state. There are more depressed people than the happy people because they are struggling with their life. But there are many ways to prevent it. Research shows how laughter is the best medicine because it can brighten people’s mood, regulate health, and help one individual to gain hope for their future.
Often people find themselves running on autopilot, doing a routine, and just being where they are supposed to be without even noticing it. Human beings consist of physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social aspects. Therefore, from time to time everyone needs a break from reality to fulfill not only their tasks, but also their wants and needs to survive. Through humor, human beings could take a break from the serious, day-to-day activities in life. Humor serves each person tendencies to laugh to provide amusement. From a student whispering a funny comment about the teacher to his/her seatmate, to stand-up comedians throwing knock-knock jokes in front of the audience, humor serves as entertainment and amusement to people. Though the intent of humor is amusement and laughter, others may tend to disagree like Peter Hyman in his essay “Stop Before They Joke Again,” in which he argues that humor is only used in a negative manner nowadays. Although it is true that there are some who uses humor negatively, there are still cultures alive that still make use of humor in a positive manner, and an example of that is the Filipino culture. Within the Filipino culture, humor is used to ease tragedies, to lessen conflicts, and to help socialize.
