Contemporary Music and the Effects It Has on Youth

The lyrical content of modern music has had a noticeable affect on the actions of all society. Few limitations have been applied to the availability of these horrid songs, so the ears of young children are still exposed to them. These children do not realize the affect it has upon them. ''People perceive media content to have a greater impact on others than on themselves (McLeod 1).'' Because the nation's youth is being subjected to these types of songs, children and teenagers are committing crimes, drinking alcohol, using drugs, and forming racist or sexist opinions.

Of course, media is not the only force at fault here as peers and parents are just as much to blame as media. The media is full of violence, sex and the use of addictive substances, that affects youth negatively. Being a youth in today’s society is challenging. On a daily basis, many positive and negative influences are thrown at us; Without proper guidance, a child could have a tough time distinguishing between right and wrong when their are many outlets to affect their decisions. In my elementary school we had a mentor who would talk to the men in the school.

The often references to sex and drugs in the lyrics are corrupting student’s minds. The affect on education and behavior is bad enough to ruin a student’s future. On top of that, music also affects social life and health which make the results worse. Popular music is supposed to civilize citizens but nowadays, popular music is influencing students in a bad way by using explicit content.

Like rock-n-roll and other forms of music that achieve national attention, rap is being blamed for corrupting our youth. There is a new type of rap music out called "Gangster Rap". This form of rap music is not the same and should not be compared with rap durived from the hip hop era. There has been many attempts by people in the rap business to bring positive attention to their music. They are spending a lot of time promoting the "Stop the violance" campain and others that promote education and drug awareness.

Teenagers today are negatively impacted by the messages that rap music is sending out through its lyrics, music videos, and through personal statements from the artists. The impacts include perilous things such as drugs, unprotected sex, and murder which will lead to them hurting themselves as well as others. Through censoring music and speaking up, concerned adults can help to diminish these problems although they may never completely disappear. Speech is one of the most impacting ways of getting across what someone wants to say. Through lyrics rap artist are able to convey the message they want to early to the fans.

In him is created a “me against the world” mentality that is manifested in the rap and hip-hop music that dominates his culture. Among the most common subjects of rap and hip-hop is violence and misogyny. They emphasize these two as inevitable regularities of the life lived in the streets. Their music reflects this fact by promoting violence and misogyny, which poses adverse influences on not only children and teenagers in the ghettos and urban cities but also other people affected by them. Violence and misogyny is a very serious problem that the American people have to face in today’s society.

Is today “Gangster rap” and rappers corrupting society, introducing drugs and provoking violence? In the mid-1980s Gangster rap came to be depicting images of violence, guns, gangs, drugs, and sexism. By the 1990s rap music became a major part of the industry and topped the charts. As people began to want different things; different music was created and that contributed to the variety of music that we have today. This is one of the many things that makes America different but is severely under looked by everyone.

The reason is some hip-hop song lyrics include violence, sex, vulgar language, drugs, and alcohol use. Unfortunately, teenagers are the number one fans of this music. Most parents worry about these negative influences of hip-hop and rap on the teenagers still too young to choose what is right or wrong. They as well as educators need to control or even stop this music. This change often puzzles people and they wonder how it happened. My stand in this question is yes, teenage behavior has worsened over the years. Teenage behaviors are worse than it was years ago because they like to involve in negative social activities, crimes and tend to be a rebellious. One of the reasons that can prove teenagers behaviours nowadays are more worse than years ago is teenagers nowadays like to involve in negative social activities. Teenagers nowadays involves in many problems such as becoming addicted to smoke, alcohol and drug.

The notorious rap group responsible for the introduction of gangsta rap was NWA (bomp). Gangsta rap has been criticized and debated over for its graphic sexual content, and violent imagery (yale). The lyrics in many songs contain violent and explicit lyrics that usually talk about killing someone along with sounds of gunshots in the background. Gangsta rap also talks about drug use and portrays negative attitudes toward women, especially black women. The artists refer to women as, “bitches,” “whores” and sex dispensing “hoes.” On the contrary there is a nice sideffect to controversy; you can use it to get a message across and most importantly it sales records, just like NWA, Ice-T, Public Enemy, and the 2 live crew soon discovered early on in their time.
