November 28,2015 Abstract Contemporary media influences the perception of it 's viewers. The portrayal of nurses has been altered throughout media. Whereas, they are caregivers in the hospital who work just as hard as the physicians, media fails to portray the reality of the career. Given the fact that I wish to pursue the nursing career media did influence me to take upon the career choice, however, what the media shows is totally different that what the nurses themselves testify, and what research shows. The obscurity of nurses implies to the viewer that nurses are unnecessary, undereducated, and are subordinates of the physicians. Although Grey 's Anatomy presents more nurses on screen throughout the duration of their episodes, nurses merely serve as a backdrop with attempts to illustrate a real hospital setting. The majority of the nurses have random spoken lines with the physician or are involved in the subplot of the show, like nursing strikes or love affairs. House and Grey 's Anatomy demonstrate physician 's performing task which in actuality are carried out by nurses, glorifying their job title in comparison to a nurses. Physicians are shown performing tasks such as, “triage, patient teaching, giving medications, providing psycho-social support, minute-to-minute care of the critically ill, and preventative care such as vaccinations” (The Center of Nursing Advocacy,1). However, reality shows nurses are the real patient caretakers who protect the interest of the patient by giving them daily treatment and providing them with psychological and emotional support. (RN Job Description,1). Whereas, Dr. House from House is depicted as a genius physician who needs little to no help to diagnose a patient, Dr. Shepherd from Grey 's Anatomy, is portrayed as an authoritative brilliant surgeon.
