Chapter 1: The Constitution of the United States The Constitution of the United States is the single most important document in United States history. This document embraces the idea of constitutionalism, the belief in limiting governmental power by a written charter. The Constitution does many things like outlining the organization of government. It also grants power and serves as the symbol of a nation which at the time was still young and seeking its freedom. All these things are necessary for a government to achieve what it wants to. Before the Constitution was made, the nation of the US was still young and looking for ways to find it’s freedom from their British oppressors. The Articles of Confederation were fully ratified by 1779 and originally included thirteen different articles with different statements about the political system and the powers of congress. Articles 1-13 are as follows, Names the confederacy as the United States of America, guarantee of the powers of the member states, defense and protection of the liberties of the states, Citizens of each states have citizenship in every state, selection by state legislatures of delegate to Congress, states are prohibited in engaging with any foreign affairs militarily, appointment by state legislatures of all militia officers of or under the rank of colonel, national expenses to be paid by states to Congress, sole power to make peace and war placed in Congress, committee of the State authorized to act for Congress when Congress was not in session, provision for Canada to join the United States, debts previously incurred by Congress are deemed obligations, and obligations of each state to abide by the provisions of the Articles of
