Societies Paralyzing Effect on The Disabled
People with disabilities have been treated as social pariahs for hundreds of years and still are to this day. There are a countless number of disabilities integrated in people around the world, which are all subject to scrutiny and rejection from society. Conjoined twins, notorious for the name “Siamese twins”, are identical twins that are joined in the womb. Chang and Eng Bunker are the most renowned conjoined twins, and were treated as entertainment and not as human beings. Conjoined twins date back as early as the 1800s and were treated as outcasts and monstrous freak shows. Many conjoined twins were seen in carnivals as side acts. According to Kalder’s piece about carnival life, “Freaks is his history of legendary sideshow performers such as Chang and Eng, or Grace McDaniels, the mule-faced woman.” (Kalder, “Step right up for carny classics.”) Chang and Eng along with an abundance of other conjoined twins were exhibited as freak shows in carnivals and other performances. American Horror Story is a television series that changes the storyline of horror each season. Season four of this popular show American Horror Story: “Freak Show”, the first episode “Monsters Among Us” starts off with a milk man being attacked by a “creature” who is described by witnesses as “monstrously deformed”. Using words like monstrous, freakish, and weird insinuates a bad connotation towards the disabled, viewing them as abnormal and less than a human being. Constantly being discriminated against and judged is something no one would wish to live with. Being disabled comes with it’s fair share of struggles, but then again so does everything else.
