Conflicts in the Lord of the Flies

When you have a large group of young school boys on an island all alone, you are bound to have conflicts. The conflict may be between two boys, a boy and himself, a boy and nature, or a boy and society. In the book by William Golding, there are many conflicts.

The most major conflict in the book is the one between the instincts of savagery and civilization in the boys. The instinct of civilization is dominant when the boys first get to the island. They have been part of a civilization their whole lives and immediately after they getting to the island, they start creating a new one. Ralph and Piggy find a conch shell and blow it to call all the boys together. They elect Ralph as the leader of their new civilization. Every time Ralph blows the conch, all of the boys gather on the platform and listen to him. In the beginning, when he tells them to do something they do it right away. As time progresses, the instinct of civilization gets weaker and weaker in the boys which could be seen in the way some began to rebel.
