An identity can be infused with family, place of origin, and surroundings. This causes a person to have conflicts with their identities. Work by authors can show how protagonist struggles to find the identity and from an identity. Some of these works would be “The Sun, the Moon, the Stars” by Junot Diaz, “Gots Is What You Got” by W. S. Di Piero, and “The Loudest Voice” by Grace Paley. These works shows how there are main characters that have influences, from their family’s as well as countries of origin that makes it hard to have an identity. Immigrating to another place can cause there to be a confusion in one identity. Di Piero himself assimilates with the Di Piero side of his family more because he feels as how he is seen. Being seen compared to watched gives you a sense of the way the Girones are and how they would watch every move, making his feel uncomfortable. Also the Di Piero are more quiet, intellectual, and reserved like Di Piero himself. Di Piero in his essay say “The lesson I absorbed from the rough vocal music of my childhood was that we cannot be entirely at home in the world because we have a consciousness that dreams of elsewhere, heavens, and whatnot. In this quote Di Piero satets clearly that he does not feel at home because on the “rough vocal music” of the Girones. There ideas and values have influanced Di Piero because he can distinctively recall this from his childhood. He also said that he absorbed this feeling of an uncertain identity where he does not feel at home because of their vocals, meaning the way they speak. The two side of his family make it hard from him to assimilate to part of Italy, making it have for him to have a sense identity.
