The United States is a strong and powerful nation that is respected by most other countries, but it was not always this way. In the United States’ early history, the Articles of Confederation established the purposes of the national government after it declared independence from Great Britain. The Articles were basically a “league of friendship” between the thirteen states, and it led to an extremely weak government.
