Ellis Island has been used as an immigration inspection center for over 60 years. The process they used to get immigrants into the United States was asking basic questions like money, name and occupation. There was also a medical procedure to get by Ellis Island, Ellis Island closed its immigration process in 1954.
In the "Amusing the Million: Coney Island at the Turn of the Century", John F. Kasson writes neatly about the history of Coney Island and explains the effects of this history on the United States of America. What I liked most about the story is the fact that the author gives the reader a good feeling of the island, even if is through literature. As a reader, I was carried away by the story and found myself imagining touring the island. Through reading the story, the reader gets a clear view of the island and can imagine exactly how it looks like.

Following the steps of the Dutch who first came to Lower Manhattan, we embarked on the Staten Island Ferry on Sunday, Nov. 10, and we could see one of the world’s most famous figures: The Statue of Liberty, a gift from the French to the U.S. that was put in such a strategic and historic place. The view of the green icon from the boat that was transporting passengers from Staten Island to Lower Manhattan, with the skyline of New Jersey in the background, and New York to our right, was a delightful experience. Not one person on the ferry was like the other, one could see people from all over the world, joined together and representing New York’s diversity, trying to relive the same experience that the Dutch had centuries ago. Some people take this ride every day for work; others were simply tourists or inhabitants of the New York metropolitan area.

The want to relax and to be entertained has always been a part of human nature. It seems that business has always been able to find ways to fulfill this want. But throughout the history of the United States the job of achieving this task has not been easy. More attractive ideas and inventions were constantly knocking out the old ways to enjoy life.
During the late nineteenth century, America was undergoing a cultural change in society. An island with Amusement Parks and vast beaches was underway in development to change the face of America in ways no one could have imagined at the time. The island was referred to as Coney Island. Coney Island Amusement Parks was built in a span of 30 years that would provide the American people a place to relax and enjoy time together with their friends and family. As a whole, Coney Island at the turn of the century, offered the ways of the future in distinctive ways; through technological advances of the era. Around 1900, the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company created steam railways that connected Manhattan and Brooklyn, thus making Coney Island much more accessible to people living the city (Source 2). Coney Island was a symbol of America in the early twentieth century, where all of America’s values and traditions were defined and brought into one place. In a sense, Coney Island took Americans from the Victorian age, to a more modern and futuristic sense of what America could potentially become. Changing economic and social conditions helped to create the basis of new mass culture that was carried on into the new century (Source 1)
Castle Clinton stands proudly today at its grand old spot in Battery Park, staunchly waiting to greet you. Walk inside its thick stone walls, and see what it felt like in the good old days, when fortresses were fortresses, and people were glad of it. Enjoy reading the historical markers attached to its walls, and thank the civic groups of the 1940s who fought to make this possible. It's that time of the year again here in the Sunshine State. The warm Spring season is upon us, creating beautiful luxurious weather for all to enjoy. On April 15th, in the small historic town of Newberry, Fla., the city will be hosting their first annual Newberry WestFest Music Festival. Families and friends from all over are encouraged to come experience a unique festival provided by the city.
The culture of New Orleans is at its best during Mardi Gras. However so are hotels, so if you're planning on making the trip and staying in downtown New Orleans, make reservations a few months in advance. Despite the French Quarters old historic appeal, there are many excellent hotels to stay at. Well, this is how they do it down in "Nawlins", so if you want a bite of culture and fun, Mardi Gras is the place for you. It's just one of those things you have to visit once, take a few friends and family and a note to remind you that you have to go back eventually. Be sure to make it there a few days before the actual Mardi Gras day, to get a feel for it all, b/c after that, it's gone for another year. When you associate anything with New York City it is usually the extraordinary buildings that pierce the sky or the congested sidewalks with people desperate to shop in the famous stores in which celebrities dwell. Even with my short visit there I found myself lost within the Big Apple. The voices of the never-ending attractions call out and envelop you in their awe. The streets are filled with an atmosphere that is like a young child on a shopping spree in a candy store. Although your feet swelter from the continuous walking, you find yourself pressing on with the yearning to discover the 'New York Experience'.
