Today, there are thousands of people who play sports with a huge risk of severe injuries such as concussions. This is a major problem in most sports mainly being football. This is mainly because of either the lack of protection or lack of rules. I believe that there should be more rules or protection to prevent concussions. The main problem is that there are too many kids and adults becoming severely injured because of lack of awareness for concussions. Many of solutions have been tried but that usually only lowers the amount of injuries by a small percentage. A solution to this problem could be to increase the awareness for concussions by creating more rules in professional sports. The amount of concussions need to be lowered. To many people play sports with concussions. This can cause serious brain trauma (Infohio). Many sports players play with concussions. According to Ken Belson of The New York Times, in his article entitled Study Suggests That Some Football Helmets Are More Protective, this is a major problem because these people are at most risk for concussions and serious bra...
Playing football comes with great costs, including physical and mental health deterioration, plus the amount of time spent prepping before game day. Which can pose several questions, “Why suffer for a game, is it worth the money? Is it worth the fame? How great is the cost?” I believe that football, should have stricter regulations for the treatment of injuries, along with informing players of just how devastating a concussion can be, along with the other major injuries that commonly occur while playing football.
The average NFL player takes up to 1,000 blows to the head throughout their football career. Some of those blows can have the force of a sledgehammer (“RealNatural”). Based on a research study by Dr. Jesse David, there were 265 concussions reported in the 2012 season, during the 2011 season there were 266 concussions, and 270 concussions in 2010 season (Kacsmar). It has been known that repeated blows to the head can cause long-term brain damage since at least the 1950’s, long before most of the NFL players had begun their careers (“RealNatural”). Past infractions of the NFL have already resulted in over 4,500 forme...
Millions of people are registered throughout North America for participation in Canada’s national sport and pastime, ice hockey. Most young hockey players have the dream of making it to the National Hockey League (NHL). Because of this incentive to keep striving towards their ultimate goal in their hockey career, they idolize the players in the NHL. Therefore, youth players may obtain certain habits from the elite, whether those habits are good or bad. Some cases are of bad influences, such as young players obtaining the dirty playing habits of the professionals. The primary action that influences the youthful population is body checking. With the thought of losing a game, it is no wonder why players have the urge to play rough and potentially hurt the opposing team in order to be victorious. For that reason, hockey is a strong collision sport that requires great skill and motivation. Although body checking is believed to be a useful tool in the winning of hockey games, it can be the cause that leads to injury among players. Because of the rougher play, lasting brain injuries are becoming a worry and too many players are exposed to the lasting effects of the head injury. According to Michael Cusimano July 22, 2003 the article entitled “Body Checking and Concussions” states, “With the rising incidence of traumatic brain injury in hockey, too many players are exposed to the lasting effects of such injuries, some of which are not fully realized until the brain completes its maturation.” For this reason, new equipment and regulations need to be devised for use in the near future.
The goal is to achieve and to attain certain knowledge of concussions and proper helmet safety and to propose new suggestions to help decrease the incidence of sports-related concussions.
III. Thesis/Argument: In order to decrease the occurrence of concussions, stricter rules need to be applied in all levels of football.
Football is America’s favorite sport. It is a fast-paced, hard-hitting game. Every week thousands of men and boys all across the country take part in football and every week these men and boys receive violent hits during the game. Frequently, as a result of these violent hits, the player receives a concussion. However, the long-term effects of concussions on players are not fully understood. New research shows that even a slight concussion in a football game can have lasting effects on a player. As a result of this research, children under the age of fourteen should not play tackle football.
An anonymous person once said, "He who has health has hope; and he who has hope has everything." Ever since I was a young girl, I always knew I wanted to do something with helping people. But as I grew up, I also took an interest in sports, which leads me to where I am today. I would like to be able to help people in the sports ' world. In this essay, I plan to research concussions and how the long-term effects can impact people for the rest of their lives. Through research, I have learned exactly what a concussion is, the long-term effects and severity, and finally the treatments for a concussion. This relates to my senior project because for my final product, I will be presenting the lasting effects of concussions.
To concur with the first point, high school athletes receive more concussions than college players do. The National Research Council has determined that “High school athletes suffer concussions at nearly twice the rate of college players.” Although high schools take more action in keeping their players safe it is still dangerous for high schoolers who are in these contact sports. Despite the fact that there are impact test for athletes to take, it still will not keep them safe from obtaining a concussion. Because high school athletes receive more head injuries than college players, it raises the question of should athletes only be able to have one concussion before they have to stop participating in contact sports?
Awareness about the severity of concussions, particularly on young brains, has increased, but researchers are still seeing a rise in high school concussions. According to the National Academy of Sciences, out of 10,000 high school football games and practices there are approximately eleven concussions reported; two times more than college football. But researchers strongly believe the number for high school football concussions would be significantly higher if there were more reported concussions and less unreported. Safety guidelines for concussions in the NFL and NCAA have increased, but there is still an insufficient amount of safety in high school sports. Many high schools in the United States should have stricter guidelines to better
When a football player gets a concussion they usually go back to practice after 7-10 days after they got there concussion. They have researched that the football players who have had a concussion that they have less water movement in the brains or diffusion and that relates to the white matter tracts might be torn and leaky. Also, they found the white matter was torn and leaky 6 months after the injury has happened. Whenever a football player gets a concussion the school should have them go to a doctor and have them get a brain screening to make sure that the damage isn’t very serious. If it is serious then they should stay out of doing football for longer to make sure that they are healthy and safe. I don’t think that the schools are taking
In contrast to the positives, high school athletics can be seen in a negative light. “Concussions [from athletics] cause structural brain damage” (Solotaroff 7). Even though nobody is said to get a concussion in Friday Night Lights, they are very frequent in football and in other sports today. They occur all the time in football especially. In addition to that piece of nega...
In October of 2015, a young man named Kenny Bui was killed as a result of a tackle playing football (BBC news, 2015). This tragedy is not an uncommon event in contact sport and it is ignorant to think that it is simply a fluke. This man as well as three other young men are only a few to have lost their lives from a severe concussion in American football (BBC news, 2015).The fatal consequences of playing a simple game are present in all contact sports. Particularly hockey and football which has been the focus of my research. These two sports embody a culture that is unique to hockey and football but similar to a warrior/military culture (R. Graham, F. Rivara, M. Ford, & C. Spicer, 2014, pg. 3). This is a culture which many athletes, students,
Following behind motor vehicle crashes, traumatic brain injury in sports is the second leading cause of traumatic brain injuries for people fifth-teen to twenty-four years of age. Immense concerns follows given that American football accounts for the highest incidence of concussions (Rowson and Duma 2130). In addition, th...
They are always at the school so you can ask them a question or have them evaluate someone when needed and it costs nothing if one goes to the doctor, they could spend over $100 per visit.
Professional sports have been one of the most successful industries on earth. Not only does it provide entertainment for millions of people, it provides an escape that is critical to many people’s lives. However, there are many risks for professional athletes when they take part in their jobs. Injuries have always been a major concern in sports, especially concussions. Concussions have been this generation’s favorite injury to debate. These are very dangerous situations, and commissioners need to do everything they can to avoid this deadly injury. It is often said that concussions are not the most serious injury in sports. I say they can ruin athlete’s lives. Professional athletes should be mandated to take a leave of absence if they
