A link boy was usually a young boy that guided people home during the night with a torch. They did this before there was street lighting because at night the streets can become a dangerous place. They didn’t make much and often times had to beg to even get a penny. They had to buy their own torches which were usually made of the dried pith of a rush plant dipped in grease or sometimes fat. People believed that the link boys would try to lure the people they led into dark corners where they would be attacked by theives and this would usually end in dire consequences. In 1840, they were reffered to by a journalist as “useful nuisances on dark nights, once indispensable appendages to aristocracy.”
I chose this job because I’d rather do this that any other job on the list! It seems like the easiest yes, but it also had it’s downsides. As a link boy you had the dangerous job of leading people home in the dark. Anyone could’ve been hiding in the shadows of a building and looking to kidnap one of the little boys. They were usually poor so if one of them went missing they weren’t missed by really one. To the people that they led home, the boys were just another poor person trying to make a few cents to live off of. They could’ve easily been killed or kidnapped and used for something illegal and no one would care.
These young men couldn’t defend themselves against anything out there in the dark. They were poor so they were most likely skinny, small, and didn’t have anything to defend themselves with. There were pros and cons to having to do this job or even if someone chose to do this job. Anything that happened out there in the dark, couldn’t anything be done about it after it already happened. They were open to any and all treatme...

...en you talk to them on the walk home. This job also takes place at night. This job is easy enough for me. The fire is cheap to keep burning. All that is required is legs and eyes basically. You also have to make sure you are street smart for the night chaos. I think this would be an easy way to make some money for the time.
If link boys are common in your specific area, however, it will be harder to earn money. A person may pick a favorite link boy. They will hopefully always request and meet with this one because they trust them. This is good for both the host of money and the link boy. This is helpful because the link boy is guaranteed money each night. And the citizen is guaranteed a way home. They will also become friends, most likely. The money will be steady to the boy. The link boys are always everywhere on the streets looking for a good, paying customer.
The Serb peasants risked their lives by helping the downed airmen. They welcomed the airmen and loved them as their own people. If Germans found Serbs helping these men, they would destroy a whole village and take all the people prisoner. The author portrayed this by describing the extremes the villagers took to hide the men. General Mihailovic made sure that his guerilla forces always protected the Serbs and the airmen. They followed the men

If an individual is familiar with their surrounding “they are more likely to help” (Altruism and Helping Behavior. Print). In the essay, the authors state “the scene of the crime, the streets, in middle class society “represents all the vulgar and perilous in life” (Milgram, Stanley, and Paul Hollander. Paralyzed Witnesses: The Murder They Heard. Print.). In society, the streets, especially at night, represents the dangerous and negative sides of society due to the crimes and chaos that occur on the streets (gangs, drive-by shootings, robberies, murders, large crowds walking, etc.). The crimes and dangers of the streets cause many people to fear being on the streets alone which leads to external conflicts. When the murder was occurring, the witnesses’ attitudes of the streets prevented them from calling the police due to the fear of the streets and since the witnesses were middle-class, they believed that Genovese was poor, a criminal, or someone who has nothing else to do and was expecting for the=is to eventually

...ir eyes off of the naked women dancing. The outbursts towards the black men is farther evidence that during that time, blacks had little to no say and had not felt equal to their white counterparts. Perhaps the most conspicuous symbol of all is the battle itself. The white men pitted a group of black men against each other; the black men were in a no win situation. Instead of expressing their displeasure with the white men, the black men were forced to take their anger out on each other. The narrator also seems to seek approval by the white men; remembering his speech as he fights the other men. According to the protagonist: Should I try to win against the voice out there? Would not this go against my speech, and was not this a moment for humility, for nonresistance?” ( ). He’s worried about defying the white men; letting them down by not performing well enough.
...themselves all in surroundings that they are not only unused to, but unsafe in. Because of the nature of their predicament, this made the lost boys even more dangerous to themselves. Once all the boys had adapted to their new surroundings, they had been severely mentally and physically hardened. They had all been forced to grow up, and fast.
It’s 11:00 p.m. on a Tuesday when three young men, barely high school age, slip through a chain-link fence and into a New York City trainyard. Each carries a duffel bag, from which can be heard the rattling and clanking of spray cans. Six hours later, they re-emerge, their hands stained with paint and their bags almost empty. What have they done?
...s, demonstrated through the author's talent, are denouncing the authority figures who were supposed to guide his generation into adulthood but instead turned the youth against each other in the pursuit of superficial ideals. The soldiers were simply the victims of a meaningless war.
The boys live a new life without adults and social norms. Roles in their makeshift society have been carried out but Jack’s self-imposed responsibility only aims to fulfill his personal agenda. Jack’s fervent character is aggressiveness masquerading as passion. This destructive behavior sends Jack to a faster decline to savagery in relation to his peers.
The men who played the role of prisoner, like the guards, were selected at random. The harassment they endured, while all voluntary, was by any means less than humane. They were treated with very little respect, and denied basic rights, such as use of the restroom, and were forced to sleep on cold concrete floors for many nights as a form of punishment. When they arrived to the prison, they were stripped down, and given a change of clothes, but the “change of clothes”, was anything but what they expected to receive. They were actually dresses. The dresses were meant to emasculate the men even more than what they had been already. Rendered powerless, with lack of control of their environment, what other choice did they have than to accept what
When we look at the experiences of the men one can start to notice some key points of notice that are pointed out. One of these experiences is that the men were
The police officers escorted the seventeen men into cars and took them to the county jail, but on the way they were halted by a group of armed men, which called themselves “Knights of Liberty”. Knights of Liberty took the seventeen men out of the car and tied them to the tree. As Ellsworth reports, “They were wiped on their back and then hot tar and feathers were then applied to the bloodied backs of the seventeen men” (30).
In conclusion, after view this film, it is clear that one can see how black youth are being viewed as killers and savages. This is not true. There have been many admirable scholars and scientists who come from the African American culture. This movie, though it depicts what goes on in South America, takes the violence committed by black youth too far. One cannot view a film and take it that this is what a race is like. The filmmakers depicted black youth in a harsher light.
shows the effect of the society on them, the loss of hope they had in
A few days had past, and we were still in that dark, wet, and cold place. They gave us food and water, but we are very scared of these white men. Later I found that we had being sold to work for other white men. The dark, wet, and cold place was a boat.
